Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience
Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
4.8 out of 5 stars
One of the New York Times top seller
In her newest novel, Brene Brown writes, "If we wish to find ways to reconnect with our fellow human beings and ourselves we require language and the confidence to share our stories and take care of the stories we are told. This is the basis to build meaningful connections ."
in Atlas of the Heart, Brown takes us on a trip through 87 emotional and personal experiences which define what it is for us to consider ourselves human. While she maps out the required abilities and a concrete structure for meaningful connections Brown provides us with the tools and language to open a world of opportunities and opportunities for second chances - a world where we can be able to share and protect the stories of our most brave and most heartbreaking experiences and with each other in a way that fosters connections.
In the last 20 years of Brown's exhaustive study of the experiences that shape our identities has shaped the discussion of culture and defined what is meant by being courageous in the world we live. Atlas of the Heartdraws from this research, and Brown's unique abilities as a storyteller to demonstrate that the process of naming an event doesn't just confer more power to the experience but can give the reader the ability to comprehend significance, meaning, and the choice.
Brown writes, "I want this book to be an atlas for all of us, because I believe that, with an adventurous heart and the right maps, we can travel anywhere and never fear losing ourselves."
It also includes a printable PDF of the book's illustrations.
Please note: If you purchase this book and the accompanying PDF, it will be within the Audible Library along with the audio.

Brené Brown has been one of the most important teachers in my life, so I’m biased in this review. Her books have taught me about myself and helped me traverse the daily struggles of being human. Her podcasts have introduced me other teachers that have helped me too. She has been my gateway to studying about and hopefully becoming a better human, and for that I will always be grateful to her. Her books are always a resource I go back to when I need them. Her books give me the language to help me understand my hard feelings and experiences. I’ve passed on this knowledge to the students in my class and have seen how this knowledge helps children as well. So, I’ve been excitedly anticipating this book, since it was announced. I am not disappointed.
This is a beautiful book and exceeded my expectations. The first thing I noticed was the size, it’s a little wider than her other books. Then I was excited because it’s in color. The layout and design of each page was thoughtful. The addition of pictures and diagrams add meaning and tone to the emotions, strategies, and research being shared.
I appreciate the set-up of table of contents. Each chapter is listed with a title Places We Go … followed by the experiences and emotions that will be discussed. This gives you the ability to choose your own adventure. You can read it in order or go to where you need some knowledge. It also helps with rereading and making your way back to something you want to be reminded of. 87 emotions and experiences are a lot, and they’re written concisely so you can spend a small amount of time reading and still walk away with some new learning. Lastly, the Cultivating Meaningful Connection section at the end of the book is a useful and actionable guide to using Brené’s research to improve how you interact with yourself and others.
This book is like a textbook for being human and a resource that I plan to come back to. It is written in Brené’s authentic, comforting voice. As I read it, I hear her voice in my head like we are in conversation. I did wish that some parts were expanded, but this is a manageable useful book the way it is. Also, what I’ve learned about Brené is that this book does not end her research or conversation on these topics. They will come up on her podcasts, her research will continue, and the learning will never stop.

The cover of this book attracted me right away and I bought it because I’ve read and found the authors other books useful. This is different than the author’s other books. This is a book that’s a great gift for the right person (or yourself).
It is not the type of book I’d see value in buying electronically.
What you get from the book will vary depending on what you expect from it. It reads to me as a casual weekend conversation with a friend, where you’re sharing thoughts and opinions on emotions and life. As humans, we share stories and what our views are and sometimes influence others and at other times are open to their influence in our world. At the start of the book, Brene Brown is says she doesn’t know all the answers and so I look at this book more as one human’s experiences mixed with data rather than a text book meant to teach you facts about the intangible subject of feelings. See what perspectives it brings to your world without thinking it all will apply to yo
A book that will forever live in my living room

My original plan had been to wait for the audiobook. As a parent to a 1 and 3 year old who are currently home due to the ongoing pandemic I rarely have time to sit down and read. However, when I heard what the book was about and how it was set up I knew it was something I was going to want to be able to pick up and reference at a moments notice. After starting the book I immediately purchased more as gifts, Atlas has quickly become my number one Christmas gift. The language that we use is so important and something that I continue to see while parenting. This book goes through our most commonly experienced emotions and gives us a groundwork for being able to differentiate between them which is essential in getting our needs met by ourselves and others. I am so thankful for this book because it is so important to be able to accurately label our feelings and emotions. I also feel the need to take issue with a negative review I had read before purchasing that said that Brené takes all of the credit and then at the end notes having a team of people. Did they miss the intro which not only talks about the importance of her team and the way other voices shaped this book but also goes as far as to include a photo? Anyway, I just feel a need to say thank you for this book, I will be continuing to gift it in hopes of spreading this book's important message, it is a must have.

Highly recommend! This book is pure gold...one I believe should be in every home. Dr. Brene Brown has a way with words and conveying truth that touches heart and soul. The book itself is beautiful. Normally I mark up my books with notes, underlining, and circling key points. Somehow I can't seem to do that with this book even though I want to. I probably will end up buying a paperback for that, as I know I will be traveling through it again.
The content inside is brilliant. It truly is a map that reveals the hidden treasures and secret passages of the human heart. As I have made my way through, I have been moved to tears, laughter, and left speechless. It's also a book you'll want to take your time with, as it begs for attention and reflection and one I plan to now read through again with my husband.
There is so much more I could say, but I'll end here. Thank you Dr. Brene for this gift to the world. Thank you for having the courage to walk the walk and share your experiences, research and knowledge with us all. Forever grateful.

Really great resource overall to bring language and awareness to each nuanced emotion and to see its function. Already noticing how understanding the subtle shifts in my emotional self and labeling the emotions properly is bringing about greater calmness, presence and acceptance.

One of the Best Books I Have Ever Read
Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2021
I have always been interested in emotional intelligence and have read a few books on this topic. In fact, some of them were bestsellers in their categories. However, I always felt that the books I read talked about being self aware but never per se talked about the different emotions. I always felt a void in my knowledge and understanding.
Enter 'Atlas of the Heart' by Brene Brown. This is the book I was looking for and waiting all these years. It's a great and easy read to understand your emotions. Only when you can name your emotion first and understand what it means, a person can move on to the next step of tackling it and responding consciously. It is the key in understanding yourself better and living mindfully.
I truly believe this book should be used as a textbook in schools to teach kids about emotions. Great work.

A must read for those who have childhood trauma

I snagged this book after seeing it on my timeline on social media. but I wasn't expecting to dive head first into the world of emotions. I grew up in the household that children are to be seen not heard so I never really learned how to express my emotions in a healthy way. I only knew how to bottle them inside until they exploded. This book has helped me identify with a wide variety of emotions. I'm happy to include this book as a reference in my healing journey. Not everyone will identify with my background, some may find this book irrelevant (kudos to you if you are in-touch with your emotions), however for those who have been silenced THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU! You won't regret this purchase. I have two copies: one for therapy to take notes in and the other is on my coffee table for others to skim through. Thanks Brene for pouring so much into this book.

My favourite of all of Brene’s books
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2021
I have been a huge fan of Brené Brown since her first best-selling book - "The Gifts of Imperfection", published 10 years ago. I've read every single book she's written since and each left me transformed in a different way. She's been one of the guiding lights on both my personal and professional journeys over the past decade. It was hard for me to believe she'd ever write something else that would turn my world completely upside down, yet I have to say that "Atlas of the Heart" might just be that book.
Of all of Brene's books, this has to be my favourite! It is truly a map for voicing feelings we often don't have the right words for. A map for understanding our feelings and making friends with them - even the painful ones that we usually would do anything to avoid. It's a treasure-trove of language to map out the most important inner landscape of our humanity. I think it should be a must-read for parents, teachers and any human who's ever asked themselves - "What's gotten into me? Why am I reacting this way? How can I understand myself better?"
If you're not sure whether you need this book, listen to the three "Unlocking Us" podcast episodes (on Spotify) where Brene discusses the book with her sisters, Ashley and Barrett. Such a treat!

I bought several of these books for gifts. All of the recipients loved them and remarked how visually beautiful the layout, the print, and the art/images are. The book is aesthetically very pleasing. Additionally, we all liked how Brene sorted the chapters. And of course, the material, itself, was excellent! It's a beautiful book to browse through with a friend, a partner, or with your children or grands to use as a catalyst to talk about feelings/emotions. As always, Brene's language and discussion brings clarity to the topic of emotions, which are inherently difficult to navigate and often understand. I'm enjoying and appreciating this book very much and the information it offers.

Literally a Map to the human condition
Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2022
This book is an answer to prayer. I grew up in a home where emotions were not discussed or even acknowledged. As an adult, I’ve struggled to communicate emotions and been confused by how to define them and their various connections. This has made it challenging for me to connect with others and get help from counselors. For me, “Atlas of the Heart” is the Webster’s dictionary for emotions - something none of my counselors have been able to clearly articulate. And… it’s based on research… so it’s rooted in data and she does a nice job of trying to identify the various connection points between our many emotions. That said, I’m not sure I’m 100% on-board with all of her definitions (ex. Resentment, I “think” may have a couple different uses than just the 1 definition) or the way emotions connect/interact, but this book has been tremendously helpful in putting in black & white definitions and understanding from which I can use as grounding to navigate the emotions I’ve struggled for decades to understand. Amazing resource!!!

I peeled the sticker off and had to use GooGone because of the sticky residue. All this aside, the book is phenomenal! There are pictures that enhance the experience of the book. My only thing is there are a few “four letter words” I could do without but regardless it’s still very much worth the read. It’s like free therapy, Brenè Brown hits you with some hard but much needed truths. I also have the book on audible which makes the book experience 10X better. I was looking forward to the release from the very beginning of finding out she was releasing a new book.

I am a retired happily married mother and college graduate. My siblings lives have been chaotic. Just reading through the "Introduction" has brought such clarity. While it is what we all experienced in our childhood that is the first layer of our map...it is how we deal with it that allows us to continue to travel the peaks and valleys. What I didn't know was....my map is a work of art that I continue to consciously remake....this has allowed me to move through events in my life to this day. I've never felt like I was stuck because of my childhood experiences....my map is ever changing...and it has been a true blessing.

Cultivating Meaningful Connection
Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2021
As I read the book (just finished it), I was somewhat disappointed because it seemed a glorified dictionary of various emotions/traits/behaviors. It helped me to understand the various nuances to these emotions and what really was great about the book was the end....her efforts to tie in the emotions (which are never limited to the 87 listed) to the goal of "Cultivating Meaningful Connection" which is important, at least IMHO, to living a fulfilled and purposeful life. Do not, though, skip until that last chapter or so because it may not make sense without the first 7/8ths of the book. I would say that the world really needs to understand and grasp that last 1/8th, and to incorporate those goals and make that effort each and every day to "cultivate meaningful connection" as Brene Brown describes. I know I certainly will make that my priority going forward.

A valuable relationship tool to understand your own emotions, for parents and teachers to provide children with the opportunity to learn early how to communicate what they’re feeling, for families, partners, leaders… for everyone. Could we reset the culture and start from here, please?

Another awesome Brene Brown book!

This is another great read by Brene Brown. She does a great job of breaking down the emotions/feelings into easy to digest sections. The glossy, colorful pages made for an enjoyable read and I found myself reflecting back on what she talked about for days afterwords. There are a lot of emotions/feelings discussed in the book and I think I'll continually re-read it. My only criticism of this is her references to COVID and BLM. They are only mentioned 2-3 times and very brief, but she really needs to keep anything with political undertones out of her books so they can remain un-biased and reach the furthest audience possible! You can discuss black rights without making reference to BLM (a more politically based movement). Otherwise, another fantastic read and everyone should buy this book!

The last page is the most important. That our ability to connect with others is dependent on our ability to connect to ourselves. Like love itself, we can only give what we know, so with all the emotions. This thought is so fundamentally different from organized religion (put others first) and business (put yourself first). This message is more like seek to understand, appreciate, and integrate all the emotions in your experience and you will have a richer palatte with which to paint your future relationships. And maybe also be able to avoid so,e of the pitfalls.

Brown gives us emotional literacy and language in the main section of the book, identifying and defining 86 emotions/experiences and describing them in groups that help us figure them out. The final section of the book gives us guidelines for connection. Brown is a serious researcher who makes theory and information accessible, engaging, and useful.
