Finally... a Law Practice Method that Works!

I rarely write reviews, but am compelled to share my thoughts on this brilliant plan. Disclaimer: I am an attorney enrolled in this program, and have reinvented my law firm to practice with the principles she discusses in this book. I am biased, because I believe in what Ms Katz and her team have created. Although I now work as an attorney in private practice, I served 30 years in the military and, as a combat veteran, I know the importance of a good plan that actually works. It's critical to success.

Put simply, this book and associated program has created a process that works in an area of law that can, if done correctly, preserve a family's wealth and legacy for generations. For attorneys, it's a lot of hard work to do it right, and some of the training is not legal in nature: it's on personal growth and how to communicate effectively with clients on a more emotional level. After six months of continuous learning, I can tell you what it's not: it's not a "get rich quick" scheme, it's not a cult and it's NOT easy. It's similar to your time as a law student, only without grades: her training requires dedication, focus, and the willingness to become an expert in this area of law. Ms Katz, who graduated #1 in her class in law school, understands this and has obviously put a great deal of time into creating this system. She is a very, very hard worker and it shows.

Although I am somewhat spellbound by her methods, I am not convinced that this is a "new" way of the practice of law. Rather, I believe it to be a return to the ideals of an older practice, where attorneys did not deal in impersonal, transactional documents and the all-consuming billable hour. Indeed, that model did not begin until the 1960s, when attorneys would keep track of time spent on cases and some consultants began to send bills based on that time rather than the more traditional flat fee. Unfortunately, this model has led many clients to fear contacting their attorneys lest they get large bills for relatively simple questions. This model solves that, and other problems and invigorates the more traditional "relational" model between attorney and client. It is a welcome change to the practice of law and more lawyers would be well-advised to adopt it.

In this book, she admits that just reading the book will do little for your law career: "if all you had to do was read a book . . . then every self-help book out there would miraculously impart life-changing wonders on any reader who took the time to plow through its chapters." She then describes a methodical, systemic way to address the business of law, time management, billing, and how to become a leader/advisor in your community. It's a large to-do list, but it works.

Before I registered in this program, I cold-called three lawyers who adhere to these methods. They were forthcoming, honest, open, and helpful. All have been successful, and yet each spent over an hour talking to me about how to make it work. More recently, I spoke with an attorney that built her firm into a hugely successful practice over about 18 months--it's still growing--and she told me exactly how to do it as well. This community is the first I have encountered that really wants to help others succeed. Leonardo DaVinci wrote, "poor is the pupil who does not surpass his master." This program is one that creates leaders, not followers.

For any attorney who would like to break free of the drudgery of the law and really make a difference, I highly recommend this program. I intend to bring much, if not most, of it to my own practice, and so far the feedback I have received has been glowing.

how to revolutionize the system by creating your own

The old systems tend to stay in place because the old players have too much invested in how it was done. It's such a relief to see someone not only changing the system to work for themselves but then offering that methodology to all lawyers. I'm excited to apply the tactics that Alexis used to shift my web design business out of hourly into packaged services.

Before reading this book, I avoided the legal aspects of my life and business. I had a horrible experience with previous counsel that created such complicated contracts that we lost our partners over them and the law firm ended up owning part of the business for their efforts (paid with equity because we didn't have cash at the time). After reading The New Law Business Model, I see that there are ways to engage legal protections without loosing control of my business.

We don't need to kill all the lawyers. We just need to hire the ones working for the highest good of all.

Taking these lessons from Ali Katz into my own life and business

I was drawn to this book, by its title and my love of business models. While Ali Katz tells the story of growing into loving her law practice and developing a way for others to do the same, its a story told so vulnerably, that any one trying to figure out how to break out of the system they are in but still do what they love, will get value.

I'm pretty sure that's a universal theme we can all relate to and I'm already thinking about ways to look at my life and work from the lessons and case studies she shares.

Great advice, practical, easy to follow. Ali also has great suggestions for other books that will benefit any law firm owner. What I loved most is that, it's ok to love being a solo, if that's what makes you happy. So many other coaches force this ideal of perpetual growth. But growth without joy is meaningless.

This is an excellent guide for lawyers who are looking to create a life and law practice that they love. If you've ever thought "there has to be more than this" or something along those lines this book will give you insight into what that could look like. I will be returning to this book often as I continue to intentionally build a life and law practice that I am proud of.
