Today’s interview for the Millionaire Secrets Podcast is with Todd Herman, sports and business coach, and author of the fantastic book:

The Alter Ego Effect.

I’ve got to tell you, listening to Todd speak today gave me a little shiver of excitement.

The words he spoke were just so true for my own personal journey. The Jeff Lerner you see today was initially a character I had to play.

You see, I’m actually a huge introvert.

I had to become somebody else. A different Jeff. In order to build ENTRE as you know it today.

And that’s what Todd and I talk about.

Creating and stepping into your success character.

The idea that there is a single-self is something that the self-help and psychology fields have been pushing for close to a century.

Todd disagrees strongly.

We all wear different masks in different parts of our lives.

When building a business and stepping into the world of entrepreneurship for the first time…

...you need to create a new mask. A new character.

Your...success character.

Channeling my inner superhero

Probably one of the most important reads of my adult life. Herman outlines the precise strategies used by top performers from the world of sports, politics, entertainment and more to become even more powerful on and off the field of play than they are innately.

It's counter-intuitive and makes perfect sense. His historical examples of well-known achievers using the Alter Ego Effect are ample proof - if proof is needed - that this process for improved performance works and has done for millenia.

While so many self-help books blindly suggest that you should step into an improved version of "you" (or more dangerously, that you are enough), Herman's book is the first one I've read to explain WHY a new version of you is going to be far more useful in life and specifically HOW to put that alter ego to play.

Read this book.

Brilliant methodology that anyone can use

Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2019

I’ve consumed dozens of self-help books and countless self-help podcasts in the last 12 months, trying to get back on track after a rough patch. I've felt unready and decidedly unwilling to curb this new habit until now. After reading this book, I feel for the first time in a long time that I have a plan and — best of all — hope. I am 100% clear that it's time to hit the pause button on compulsively gathering more and more and more information and to finally take action again. The book is that original, that inspiring, that solid. And while the author, Todd Herman, makes clear that the book does not contain a magic/easy button or a path of breadcrumbs to a pot of gold, it sort of does. His approach DOES seem a bit magical, super doable, and to deliver great rewards. But it also makes a TON of sense. Todd Herman is brilliant in the way he articulates an innovative but clear, accessible methodology for improved performance or transformation on the one hand, while tapping into deep truths that we all recognize on some level on the other. He also offers plenty of historical, anecdotal, and scientific evidence for many of his claims, but it felt more illustrative than absolutely necessary as the real prize here is in his approach not the underlying argument.

One thing I want to make clear: this book is really for anyone dealing with either a problem they want to overcome or a goal they want to achieve —- as well as those seeking a more comprehensive lifestyle overhaul. I had listened to the author being interviewed on Inspire Nation, a podcast, and was really really keen to learn more. But when I first began listening to the book, I became concerned that it was only for great athletes aspiring to be the best or entrepreneur types, already in the 99.9 percentile of performance, looking to close the gap. My worries were promptly addressed though as the author shares a plethora of highly relatable stories ... and manages to seamlessly navigate between issues/aspirations of his elite clientele and those of more everyday people with everyday issues. That’s probably one of the best things about the methodology he shares, how amazingly flexible and versatile it is.

Second, I see it as an amazing act of generosity for the author to share what really seems like proprietary information — including ALL of the how to — with others. He also manages to anticipate and then address all sorts of questions and potential mis-applications of his methodology, providing clear explanations and helpful strategies for addressing all, as though more than anything, his deepest desire is that all can benefit as much as possible from what he knows. That was what really struck me, took me by surprise (especially after buying all sorts of books only to find that the real nuts-and-bolts of the methods needed to be purchased separately): the sense that Todd Herman is so excited and inspired by the method's successes that he feels compelled to spread the word. And yet he somehow manages to do all of this without sounding hysterical or overly sales-hungry. Yeah ... he's a gifted thinker and communicator, who strikes just the right tone to rise above the din, inspire trust, and resonate deeply with today’s audience.

Like many others, I have played around with alter egos before, but never really thought of it in exactly that way. Very much looking forward to continuing down that path with more confidence, and more practical support, and also to use these techniques with my kids.

Cannot recommend this book highly enough!!

Full disclosure: I not only got an early copy, I helped Todd edit the book and even pushed him to actually finish it (like all first time authors, he was anxiopus about it).

I don't have much to add to the book in terms of telling you whats in it, the other reviews cover that well. I just want to tell you that this is the first book of its type that has a truly original idea I've read in a LONG LONG time.

Don't get me wrong--Todd did not invent the idea of alter egos, obviously. From Clark Kent back to the Muses, the ideas in the book are universal and timeless.

But that's what makes this book so good, is that Todd is the first to really identify and explain them. Its like he's the guy teaching fish that they live in water.

This book will, at a minimum, be a great read for you. But what most people will get from it will be a life-changing shift of perspective that creates some incredible breakthroughs (it did for me).

In an incredibly relatable journey that guides you through the process to show up in every opportunity or situation in your life, (in ways what you know you are capable but struggle to overcome self doubt, family stories, or past trauma), this book is about to change the "field of play" for me in many ways.

I’d heard about Alter Ego’s before from Todd Herman, and even put them into practice in my business, but Todd’s stories, examples and framework in the book for putting into practice these secret identities has shifted my view of how I can use DIFFERENT Alter Ego’s in the areas I struggle most.

Interestingly, it’s not only “work” that I am challenged to show up how I need to, it’s at home, too.

I’m on chapter 11 of the audio book right now, and can tell you, this book is a game changer for me as a mom, a wife and a leader.

I'll be gifting this book to every member of my team, as well as friends and clients alike, because who can't use a little motivation to bring out the hero inside? So Good.

When I first heard about the concept of alter egos, I was intrigued. But I wondered if this would really apply to me, so I decided to read the book and find out. I'm impressed and highly recommend this book.

First, the author Todd Herman is an expert in this space and has been coaching top performers for decades. Second, he explains the concepts in an engaging and relatable way with many examples of people who have used this—people you may be surprised about.

You may already be using an alter ego. I realized I was (trying to), but Herman gave me the tools to really amp it up and use it in a way that’s consistent.

Also, great takeaways from this book were the 5 bridges to progress and moments of impact. Since reading this book, I’ve started thinking about my career and relationships in those terms and already see a huge difference.

I love the way this book contains actionable steps for you to apply the alter ego approach in your life. There are so many areas of my life—fields of play— where I can use this.

Full disclosure. I've been a fan and student of Todd Herman's 90 Day Year program for over a year now. His new book is so inspiring. Trust me, it's worth the read if you are ready to up your A game. Your Alter Ego isn't a fraud. It's YOU helping YOU perform at your best. It's you getting out of your own way. I know that one reason I resonate so strongly with Todd's take about alter egos is how much it correlates to my own views about our intuition, and why for too many, we lose touch with the importance our intuition plays in our hearts and minds, as well as our confidence and ability to not only believe we can do great things, but actually accomplish great things.

Jump off of the mental 'merry-go-round' and into an extraordinary world!

Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2019

Like others here, I have used alter egos in a few areas of my life over the years. I've even been recommending the use of alter egos to my clients for years now. As Todd Herman admits in this book, the concept and use of alter egos is NOT new, BUT the method that Todd has developed throughout his career, and delivered to his readers in this book, is original, insightful, and powerful.

Backed by science and experience, the methods Todd Herman shares are useful to anyone struggling to overcome areas of resistance they've identified with for a lifetime. The premise of the observable duality in our selves and the world, allows the reader to discover for themselves the natural story that is aching to be told of their own "enemy" and the "hero" they have dreamed of being in their own lives.

If you have searched the modern pop-psychology and self-help industry and continually come up lacking answers, you will be happy to know that Todd has developed a way for his readers to "get off the merry-go-round" and create a way (the intentional and methodical use of alter egos) to take action and play an entirely new game. A way that will take you on a journey where you become the hero of your own life.

In this book, Todd Herman walks you through the process step by step. He gives it all away, including additional resources to help the reader make this happen at alteregoeffect.com.

This book is truly a gift to a world of people who long to experience the extraordinary in every day.

“Martin Luther King Jr. wore glasses because he felt they ‘made him look more distinguished’.”

When we’re kids—we always played pretend. Pretend we were someone on TV, or in a book we read. Or in the comics we saved. Over time, that pretend muscle atrophied. We gave into the world & the roles the world expected of us.

No one grows up, pretending to be a Project Manager.

Or a HR specialist. Those roles we gain over time, are roles we don’t dream about. They’re roles we learn that pay. But eventually, that payout is a mortgage. OR a freelance arrangement between our best selves, & our least enabled selves.

Or in Todd Herman’s parlance—the self that shows up in the Ordinary World, not the self in the Extraordinary World.

We grow up to be like our parents, or Superman (or an X-Man maybe), or a major media figure. Everyone wanted to “Be Like Mike”, excluding whatever faults he had. Mike showed up, to a Hall of Fame level.

Herman's book is a different process to do that: Show up. It’s about being the extraordinary character, in the field of play that calls to us the most.

What I love about this book, is the clear, explicit process which you can create a heroic identity. A heroic self—whether an amalgam of fiction, nonfiction, or both. And figuring out when to call forward that character into our real lives, to transcend our faults.

As he says in the book: “This is the magic of the Alter Ego. You create your world. You decide who shows up on your Field of Play. And you decide what Superpowers and characteristics you’ll bring into your world, to get the results you want.”

If you want to act like a winner in 2020, you have to decide who that winner would be, how would they think, feel, & act. Then, build a practice where you can act as if you’re them. That’s the power in this book.

Use your childhood skills to bring out your best self

As a former athletic coach and avid sports fan, I often wondered how great athletes could be so violent on the football field or in the boxing ring, and then be so kind and gentle off of it. Well that question was answered right away in Chapter 1 with Todd's story of a meeting with the great Bo Jackson. Bo said "Bo Jackson never played a down of football in his entire life." He used the power of an Alter Ego.

Todd's book then outlines how to build your own Alter Ego to bring out your best self. He uses the power of story in his examples and instructions that make the read entertaining and productive.

And no, this is not just for athletes and business leaders. My favorite story involves an Army Colonel's desire to be a better parent and family man. Todd uses the example on how an alter ego can transform you from your "work persona" to a family man with a very simple process. This is not being fake. This is a process to trigger the real you and bring that person out when you need him or her.

I give this book 5 stars. It is a quick but powerful read. This is destined to be a business and self help classic!

As soon as I read The Alter Ego Effect, I recommended it to all my math students. As I read, I thought to myself--OMG I have always done this! I never knew there was a name or that this was a strategy that people intentionally utilized, but the alter ego effect is largely responsible for why I succeeded in math as a student and went on to become a math professor. Whenever I got scared that I didn't know what to do, I would think to myself -- Prof. Myhre (this one awesome and particularly fearless math professor) wouldn't be scared. She'd just try. If what she tried didn't work, she wouldn't care. She'd just learn from it and try something else. I harnessed her fearlessness until, at some point, it just became a part of who I was. Every semester I have students who struggle with math anxiety and this will be a book and strategy that I recommend to them. Yes, it's powerful for both business and athletics, but I think it can be just as powerful in academia. Well done, Todd Herman. This is a truly fantastic book and it will impact many lives.

I posted a photo of the copy of the Alter Ego Effect book because I wanted to share it’s value. Perhaps you can’t see them all, but I marked each page with a post it note to remind myself to go back in and read a paragraph of intense value.

Throughout the book, I felt like I was being coached in a thoroughly clear and understandable way. I could hardly put the book down as I was so determined to do the work that the author lays out.

To think that all these years of watching events like the Olympics and gazing at super-human athletes thinking ‘oh I could never do that’ I now realize that we can create our own alter ego to help us to do the things our normal selves can’t do is truly mind-boggling.

As a mother to 2 small children, I cannot tell you how excited I am to have a toolkit to share with them to help them do life better.

The biggest shocker for me was the Superman story. We all know that movie and yet nobody really figured out who the real alter ego was.

I have already bought extra copies of this book and have mailed them to friends who I know can use this book as a catalyst to be a better entrepreneur or a present wife and Mom.

It’s an altogether fantastic read.

A Surprisingly Simple Concept That can Transform Your Life

What a wonderful concept! I have toyed with the thought "what would ____ do in this situation?" recently. The Alter Ego Effect gives you insight, asks great questions, and gives you actual steps to make this work for you. In my career (creative entrepreneur,) I chose Joanna Gaines as my alter ego, because I wanted to channel that spirit of making it on your own terms, and maintaining a relatable and warm vibe while doing it. This book is an absolute MUST, if you feel as though you're standing in your own way.

I read a lot of books on self-improvement, business, etc. Usually, I go for an audio book or kindle book. It's rare that I choose a actual book. I purchased this one as a kindle book, but will order the paperback version, as well. I want to be able to refer to it often, mark it up with notes, and LIVE it.
