Ben is a former chiropractor turned online entrepreneur who now specializes in showing small businesses how to grow using the world wide web.

Dr. Adkins doesn’t just know how to crack your back, he also knows how to crack the social media code to accomplish just about anything using digital marketing.

Not many doctors go from the medical field to being an online entrepreneur so why did Ben?

Well, much like many new chiropractors - Ben was really struggling to find clients.

Dr. Adkins went from praying to see a new client walk through his door to having to hire more doctors to cater to the huge demand he had accumulated in just 6 months!

Patients were coming from near and far to visit Ben’s practice, this was a dramatic change from how he started out.

Once he had made this dramatic turn around happen for his business, he wanted to help others to do the same.

Fast forward to today and he’s helping thousands of new entrepreneurs to apply the same proven strategies that he used to create such growth in just 6 months.

Within just a few months, Ben made more money in one lunch hour though selling his PDF’s than he would in a whole month as a chiropractor.

Didn't know what to expect so was pleasantly surprised (probably because the title evoked "get rich fast"). Things I liked: 1) thorough coverage of all things related to conceiving, test driving, launching and growing a micro business. 2) case studies and realistic financials: perfectly highlighted the diverse range of product and services that can be offered through such a model of micro business. The financials are realistic numbers, therefore setting reasonable expectations (hopefully) for people who might consider trying or benchmarking. 3) The discussion about scaling vs. keeping it small is a very interesting one: I liked that the author presented real-life cases for either scenarios for food for thought instead of advocating one or the other (e.g. presenting a single "formula" as the golden rule that all shall follow)--I can see how this particular decision can be case sensitive and there really is no "right" answer as long as it works for the entrepreneur! 4) Keep hearing the term "the gig economy" these days and this book now gives me a window into a world of side-hustle and micro businesses that I was not previously aware of or super interested in. Enjoyed the book a lot, and might be considering trying my hand at some side-gigs. I mean, why not?

I just finished reading the book and I have to say that I have found it to be very, ver useful. I have my own business, but was struggling with ways to make it more fun, challenging and profitable. " The $100 STARTUP" Has provided me with new ideas that are simple to implement. I thoroughly enjoyed “The $100 Startup

I am a student at University of Baltimore, and this book was assigned to me for my survey Entrepreneurship course. I thoroughly enjoyed “The $100 Startup,” and think it would be very useful for Entrepreneurship students because the reading is straightforward and concepts are easy to follow. Some people believe that it takes at least tens of thousands of dollars to start a business. However, Guillebeau offers a more relatable perspective in “The $100 Startup.” He provides a blueprint on how to produce a quality product or service that consumers will value enough to pay for. What I really enjoyed about the book is that the author interviewed real business owners that met his criteria. This includes a unique business model, using no more than $1000 in startup capital, and no special skills. The business had to have earned at least $50,000 in net income and had to disclose their income. Also the business required fewer than five employees. Part One shares the various reasons why people go into business for themselves and the demographics of the business owner and their customers. The second part of the book outlines various but simple business plans, marketing and launching techniques. The last part focuses on expanding the business into chains, franchises and how to overcome major challenges. Micro-entrepreneurs have been around since the beginning of time, and the concept should not be confused with “get rich quick” schemes. With focus and hard work, it is possible for anyone to work for themselves.

Excellent book. No book is the final answer, but this book has abundant suggestions. It is way more than vague, motivational stuff. It is full of stories of companies people have started along with how they did it. It also has lots of specific tips, steps, etch. Chris Guillebeau is going to be a savior to countless of us trying to escape Cube-atory. After checking it out from my local library, I bought my own copy, and I'm making my equally miserable coworkers read it. Chris' other books are also excellent. I'll soon purchase a few copies of "The Happiness of Pursuit" to give to friends.

I love Chris Guillebeau's books and his new daily podcast, Side Hustle School. I read the print version of The $100 Startup when it was released and found his profiles of many small startups in the book to be inspiring. The mere fact that there were so many small successful startups out there was very motivating. Since reading the book, I started a pet sitting/dog walking side hustle. I'm now seeking an idea for an additional startup that will fit in with my pet care business, so I am re-reading this book and listening to the audio version as a refresher and motivator. I highly recommend this book for people who are curious about starting a small business or side hustle, who are looking for a business startup idea or who are in the beginning stages of building a small business.

Great overview of the many ways you can start-grow a business.

Chris, does a great job in outlining and providing solid examples on how to start a biz on the cheap.

A biz you can choose to have freedom in where/how you live and what and if you want growth (I.e. Employees-contractors). He provides solid case studies and interviews from all over the world along with checklists to help you get started.

I particularly liked how Chris gave examples on different value people gave for success. Often times people only value success as making x millions, or being acquired, or IPO, which can definitely be success but making far less and valuing time and freedom to do exactly what you want with your time & life can definitely be considered a success. I really enjoyed Chris giving real life examples of people doing exactly this!

I write this review while traveling Ireland for 5 weeks with my family (wife & 2 boys 8 & 12). I operate a small 3 person home inspection service business doing in the 350k range...doesn't matter service-product technology allows you to live life on your terms!! The life of your dreams is out their...go for it!

And one last important note: as Chris wrote near the end of the book be sure to give back to those that haven't been so fortunate to live in a land of entrepreneurship like the US :-) everyone deserves an opportunity!!

The title makes this sound a bit like "the 4 hour workweek", but I assure you it is not.

The best parts of this book are where the author gives you a peek in to micro-businesses run by regular people, and small businesses that bloomed from hobbies or ideas.

The parts which are not so interesting are where the author attempts to help you craft your own. Maybe it is a personal preference, but I learn more from observing others than from trying to generalize a set of rules into my own scenario. Your mileage may vary.

Get Started

Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2012

Sometimes the most important thing to stirring you to action is realizing that you're not alone, and that many, many people have done this before you. Chris systematically breaks down the psychological, financial, and structural barriers (perceived or real) that often get in the way of people taking an idea from concept to reality.

Some of the key points he makes:

* You already have everything you need. Your skill sets, NOW, are what you can use to make a business. (It's not about obtaining another degree, or more skills, or more money -- you can get started).

* It's not enough to have passion. Your passions have to intersect with the creation of a product that is also useful and valuable to someone else. The good news is that you can find that.

* Even location independent workers still work. The myth of the permanent vacation is construed. You have to do the work.

* Having one job in an uncertain economy may be a much riskier endeavor than having multiple streams of income or running your own business. In today's economy, diversifying your work may be the key to success.

* At the same time, you don't have to quit your day job. It's not about the drama and the glitz of walking away in a huff; it's about making what you have work, and hustling on the side if you have to. Case after case shows us people making it happen.

The most useful part of the book (for me) was the detailed break-down of several critical processes in business creation. The "decision-making matrix" detailed how to evaluate projects and figure out which ones were worth doing; and while it seems simple, it was a life-changer for me because I have difficulty making decisions. The "product launch checklist" and "one page business plan" both gave me something concrete and actionable that I could use, today, to start writing my own plans.

It seems so simple on paper, but that's the genius behind Chris' work: he takes these big, scary, often ovewhelming processes and gives a step-by-step blueprint that shows you what's possible and makes it seem do-able through case studies, mapping and analysis. And that's the point: you can do it, and you can get started right away.

Great Insights and Ideas Worth Reading

For someone that is looking to take the route of becoming an entrepreneur I really enjoyed this book. The ideas and insights are put into a very simple and comprehensive format. There are stories to compliment ideas, key concepts, and basic methods that are conveyed in the book.

The first hand accounts from people who knowingly, unknowingly, or who stumbled into entrepreneurship are fantastic. I am the type of person that enjoys a story with a lesson or example to it. These are a large part of the book. Also, the names, websites, and businesses are mentioned through out the book of these people so you too can explore what these people mentioned have done.

This is not a very heavy thick book that is difficult to read. It does challenge you with different ways to think and approach going your own way as a career or creating another source of income in addition to working for someone else.

The $100 Startup is a must-read for any individual planning to go into business for themselves. The book gives countless examples of real people doing what they love and getting paid to do it. Rather than giving a narrow step-by-step guide to a specific kind of business, Guillebeau covers the concept of microbusiness in broad strokes. This book will help you regardless of your industry, field or pursuit- the general principles he lays out apply across the board.

Personally, I couldn't get through more than a few pages without stopping to write down my own ideas. I can't think of a better recommendation for a book on business- it sparked so much creative thought. I usually tear through books like this, but instead of spending a few hours flipping pages, I spent a week taking extensive notes for my own business. Every chapter gave me new insight and guidance. I can't recommend this book highly enough to new entrepreneurs.

Refreshing & Inspirational

This most recent book from Chris is an inspirational next-step in his ongoing quest to show everyday, "regular" people how to live life -- and make a living -- differently, with purpose, and making the most of what they already have or know. The book draws from a wide and varied array of real-life experiences, where individuals have used a number of unconventional approaches to simultaneously generate income and create a more fulfilling way to live life.

The book strikes an excellent balance of Chris sharing wisdom from his own experience of "unconventional" living, and delving into the strategies and tactics many other micro-entrepreneurs have used to become successful (on their own terms and by their own definition). Chris has an excellent writing style, which makes the book an enjoyable read -- while at the same time presenting many valuable examples, tips, and strategies for making a living in ways you might not ever have considered.

If you haven't already read Chris's other book -- The Art of Non-Conformity -- I recommend you get both. His perspective is a unique and refreshing alternative to the traditional thinking about how to make a living, and this book shows you how to get started without throwing caution (or your entire savings account) to the wind.

[This review was based on an advance copy of the hardcover edition received from the publisher. I also made an advance purchase of the Kindle version -- so I could have a mobile copy with me for reference]

I like Inc. magazine and have read other small biz books but this is different. Most things I have read are out of touch with a truly small biz or micro business. They talk about VC investors, "my team", etc. Most of us are just trying to get started and have no chance of ever meeting a VC nor the inclination to do so.

The $100 start up is what the title suggests. It guides anyone with a tiny bit of money to start a business they can make really good money but not necessarily become a millionaire from. There is plenty of actionable advice and stories of successful micro business owners so we can try and duplicate their steps to success .Chris (the author) is an interesting guy this book was written in a way that was super easy to follow. I've been a big fan of Chris' blog for a long time and wanted to buy the book to show support. To be honest, I didn't actually think anything would be that relevant to me. The "$100 startup" title sounded too improbable. But I get it, it's a catchy title.

This book is like the new The 4-Hour Workweek . Actually, that's almost a disservice. 4WW had some interesting ideas but it didn't gel with me. The $100 Startup makes sense. I've always wanted to be a solopreneur but had no idea how. I'm not too excited about virtual assistants and all that. I just want to create something of value and live on my terms. I feel that this book gives you the road map.

I wish they taught us this kind of stuff when I was in college.

There is something very unique about this book: Inspiration.

This is one of the best books about entrepreneurship I've read in life. It provides, in a very clear way, smart strategies to start your own venture without selling your soul to a bank or to external investors. Chris Guillebeau goes to greats lengths to provide real life examples of successful people who started with almost nothing. It tells you exactly what works and what doesn't work when you are starting from scratch. Besides, it is one of the only books I read that considers success stories outside of North America.

This book is for those who you want to start your micro-business and evolve it to a life fulfilling dream. Along the same lines, this book is NOT for those who want to learn about angel investing, large number of employees, venture capital, bank loans.

This book is all about building a lasting lifestyle business. It will inspire you. It will give you the courage to get started.

Chris Guillebeau, once again, blew me away with his motivational encouragement to live your dreams! The advice he provides and shares from other successful entrepreneurs in The $100 Startup is so helpful. It is real advice that can help take a dream from a goal to reality.

My husband and I have been small business owners for the past three years and we both read the book with excitement. Our book is full of underlines and circles with ideas of how we can make our business even more successful. His words reminded us that there is still so much to learn and so many ways to improve upon what we are doing already!

One of my favorite parts of the book was hearing the stories of so many other entrepreneurs who are making their dreams a reality everyday. Hearing their stories reminded me that we are actually not "crazy" and there are a lot of other people out there who have made the choice to live the life they want to live and are happy (and profitable too) doing just that!

The step by step practical advice that Chris has shared in The $100 Startup is an awesome read for anyone who has an interest in making his/her dream of owning a business a reality... or, in fact, anyone who is already doing just that but would like to "create a new future" for the business he/she has already created! Enjoy!!

Great book!!! It really inspired me! I completed my business plan after reading it. I love that it encourages people to start now instead of waiting until all their ducks are in a row. People put things off until the "perfect time" and then it never comes. So I am not waiting!

I'm giving it 5 stars not because it has everything you need, but because it inspires you to get off your butt and get moving with your dreams, and that is the most important part of business success. Sure, as a corporate manager you can make more, and with less headache, than if you owned a micro-business. But the joy of creating your own destiny has value that can't be measured in dollars.Highly recommend.
