A must read for anyone that wants to win in the WAR FOR TALENT

Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2018

Everyone once in a while you read a book where you are nodding so vigorously your head hurts. No, not nodding off, nodding along. Baron's book is super-interesting and super insightful. And talk about a guy that speaks my language and that provided a mirror for me to reflect on what's important to me in my leadership style! What matters most? Meaning - check. Profits or purpose first? The latter - check. "For someone to be truly courageous, vulnerability must come first", as Baron says - A-frickin-men. But the insights in the book went well beyond confirming what I believe and giving me resolve to practice it more frequently. It reframed the way I think about many things. I'm a huge believer in the importance of meaning in the workplace but I never thought about it as the # 1 most important thing for employee loyalty. I tell stories all the time to lead, I never thought that the hallmark of a great story (a full-monty story as Baron calls it) is that you can feel the truth in it. I've been a big believer in autonomy, but Baron pinpoints why it's so important in ways I hadn't considered before - it helps an individual express their individuality. The book is packed with useful reframes and insights like these. Great read for anyone looking to solve the issue of our times - retaining and attracting talent (especially millennials) in the face of one of the greatest wars for talent in industrialized times.

Fiercely Loyal offers a fresh, modern perspective on an age old challenge... how to inspire engagement and loyalty in the business environment. Dov's done a great job of stating why these are so important to business and sharing the means of creating them. Although extremely deep and provocative, Fiercely Loyal is easy to read, understand and apply. The examples are clear and the stories are captivating. I especially enjoyed Dov's insights on how leaders can better connect with their followers. If you wish to become a leader who can create a culture of high engagement and loyalty, put this book at the top of your reading list.

A great book on the HUMAN side of leadership...

Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2015

Much of the crises in leadership today is the result of a widening rift between managerial or organizational styles and the true human expression of leadership. Dov Baron’s latest book, Fiercely Loyal, is closing that gap.

Striking a masterful balance between engaging stories and irrefutable research, Dov creates a template you can use immediately to become an authentic leader and attract followers who are Fiercely Loyal.

Knowing Dov, it was no surprise to me that he places a tremendous emphasis on the same characteristics of effective leadership that I do. Two of the most important are compassion and genuine courage. I knew we were singing in the same choir when Dov dispelled the commonly held belief that being an open and vulnerable leader is a mark of strength, not weakness…

Fiercely Loyal Cover 275“Despite what you’ve been taught, vulnerability is the very opposite of weakness; in truth, it’s all about courage. Make no mistake, for someone to be truly courageous, vulnerability must come first…

“On the other hand, real courage requires vulnerability. Real courage requires us to step into something where we cannot predict the outcome; something that, in some way, seems terrifying, not because we could die, although that may be part of how we feel, but because we feel we might receive the most painful of punishments—that of being rejected, disowned, and ultimately isolated.

“That’s why I tell you that real courage cannot exist without the risk of vulnerability!”

Throughout the book Dov validates the leadership lessons I learned as a Sensei…

I don’t think I’ve ever asked Dov if he studied martial arts, but he certainly seems like a black belt to me when he talks about two other key characteristics of a genuine leader, purpose and Mastery:

“A way to internally define mastery is our urge to get better at something, and then when we get better at it, to see if we can keep getting better. Even though it may make no logical sense, people will play musical instruments for hours each night and on the weekend just to get better. Most of these folks are not planning on becoming professionals, or even hoping to make any money from their skill, yet they toil toward mastery.

“Looking purely from the position of economics, an economist would have to ask, ‘Why are they doing this?’ It’s awe inspiringly clear. Working through the challenge of mastery gives us a deeper sense of contribution, and when we combine the desire for mastery with making a contribution, we ignite a deep tribal desire. Once again, we are part of something bigger than ourselves; we belong and we have value. Simply put, we do it because it brings about the sense of personal satis- faction that happens when we overcome a challenge, because it is fun, and most important of all, because it gives our lives meaning—and meaning, as you will see, is vital to creating a culture where your top talent is Fiercely Loyal.”

Ultimately, that’s what leadership is all about. The primary roles of a leader are to inspire the best efforts of others, direct their collective efforts toward a larger, collective success and most of all- to be a living example of personal and professional excellence.

I’ve been instigating some trouble at my events by telling people I can’t stand “Undercover Boss.” It’s an entertaining show, but it actually pisses me off that so many executives have absolutely no connection to people on the front lines.

I may include this excerpt from Fiercely Loyal in my slide deck from now on:

“Business is now, more than ever, a process of relationship. However, as I’ve said many times before, those relationships must be transparent, authentic, and genuinely caring. This also means face-to-face business, not just with your customers, but with everyone in and on your team.”

Leadership is a human expression- to my mind leadership is one of the highest expressions of human interaction.

As a leader, you can only honor that expression through compassion and caring and by being fully engaged, on the most human level, with everyone you serve. That’s the point Dov drives home in his powerful book.

The best book I've read on leadership!

You open the book, chapter one, first line, there is a simple question: What's a leader?

You probably think you know the answer, BUT Dov shared another point of view. He makes you rethink your knowledge and beliefs.

Now, think about that formula for seventeen chapters.

This book is different, he's unique, and he makes you think! Dov shared pure gold; he provides a new perspective on leadership and business.

This book is full of exercises, case studies, questions and tons of insights.

This is one of the best books I've read on leadership, perhaps the best one!

You must get a copy of this book.

My recommendation: five stars!

Kept Me Awake and Dreaming of Being in an Organization Like This

Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2015

I just finished reading Dov Baron's new book Fiercely Loyal. The last time stayed up late and got up early to finish a book because it was so good was a long time ago, I like my sleep!

Seriously my soul cries out for a world where we can all live in a way that allows us to become authentic leaders. A world where we are deeply connected to our purpose. And this book gave me a glimpse into that world.

Dov's book is a eye opening glimpse into the rare scene of authentic leaders creating fierce loyalty in their organizations. Fierce loyalty means the members of your team would stand up and fight for your organization because it represents something far greater than a job to them.

You owe it to yourself to read it if you desire to build a legacy and create change in the world. Out today pick it up and become the master of your life and the vehicle of change.

Touching, moving, and personal

Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2017

I found several parts of the book so touching and moving that I had to pause, reread, and reflect on what openness, vulnerability, and authenticity anyone can achieve. Dov Baron captures you in those parts in a way you can see how you could do the same with others. He shows you what you can do to create loyalty, bonds, and teamwork. Seeing what he can do raises the bar for yourself.

The last part, on storytelling, lays out a framework to build your stories on. We all know how valuable stories are for relationships and culture. I plan to use his framework for my stories.

Dov Baron has no problem getting in your face if necessary in order to help you grow and succeed. In fact, many of us could use a good confrontation when it comes to our views about leadership. Entire generations have been raised with the dysfunctional impression that everyone is a leader and the world will take care of them. In this book you'll learn that it's not who you hire as much as who you keep and what they contribute, that's what makes the biggest difference. Then Dov will show you HOW to keep the best people and keep them engaged.

FIERCELY LOYAL IS A MAGNIFICENT BOOK - I AM LIVING ITS PRINCIPALS AT OUR FIRM WITH AMAZING RESULTS

Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2015

I have personally engaged Dov Baron to develop fierce loyal at my firm of professional accountants in Vancouver, BC. Dov in short is a genius. Within a relatively short time, all personal conflicts were resolved, openness and vulnerability took the place of mistrust and conflict, clarity of personal and corporate purpose took shape, our efficiency improved, the culture and fun developed quickly. Dov is brilliant at developing fierce loyalty and a powerful culture.

Dov's book is equally brilliant. It's content is being practice by our firm and the results are spectacular. In fact we are developing our confidence to a point where we feel we are becoming a great example for all businesses. We are working with the millennial group here and they are responding as Dov outlines. I am becoming a millennial myself even-though I am 60 years old and it feels good. I love this book because I can continuously go back and read it to get further clarity about our journey at our firm. We are committed.

I highly recommend you read this book many times and then hire Dov and his team to make a fabulous difference in your organization.

Excellent Book to Level Up Your Leadership Savvy

Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2017

The message of Fiercely Loyal is one that's desperately needed for our times - in order for businesses to thrive, leadership has to truly care about and connect with their workforce. Dov delves into what it takes to create real deal loyalty - the type of loyalty that drives your top talent to go above and beyond.

All you've learned about leadership over the last thirty years doesn't apply anymore. It's a different world and that means we have to learn new things about how to be an effective leader. This is especially true in regards to keeping top talent! Future leaders who are effective will focus on one thing: Keeping Top Generation Talent. The ability to attract and retain exceptional talent will determine the success of organizations and which fade to oblivion in the near future. Are you skeptical? Take a look at the fact that an average business invests 1.5 to two times the annual wage of an employee for development and training. In contrast, the average millennial is having a total of 2 1/2 year... from the end of the day. This employee is likely to leave before you've paid off! And what's more, the person you paid for will use the training and abilities you paid for and put them in the position of a rival. In this book, Dov Baron provides strategies to not just retain your top performers, but make them Fiercely Loyal. This book could be the most significant thing that happens to human resources and leadership in the next 100 years...read it and implement it! The first time I've heard praise for Dov Baron's book Fiercely Loyal "Dov Baron's book Fiercely Loyal is edgy, thought-provoking relevant and a must-read! It is essential for anyone who wants to turn their company into a force to be reckoned with!" Larry Winget, author of Larry Winget, The Pitbull of Personal Development(c) and the six-time NYT/WSJ bestseller of Grow A Pair "If you do one thing this year read this book. Employees are a business leader's biggest asset and biggest liability. Dov Baron shows us how to get the most out of our team." Jeffrey Hayzlett Primetime TV Show Host, Bestselling Author and The Sometime Cowboy "Does the thought of your top performers leaving suddenly make you break out into a cold sweat? Chances are, they're already halfway out the door. Change that. Transform your company into the one to whom employees are wholeheartedly dedicated and loyal. Dov Baron's readable, illuminating guide will get you there." Marshall Goldsmith New York Times and global bestseller author of What Got You Here Will Not Get You There. Thinkers 50 top Ten Global Business thinker, and top ranked executive coach. "Dov Baron's new book Fiercely Loyal is a wake up call for leaders who are challenged by how to attract and hold on to talented people. Dov addresses issues that are talked about far too infrequently, but that are in fact the absolute keys to creating loyalty in employees today. Dov's Full Monty straight talk will shake you up, motivate you to change, and give you concrete ways to make loyalty a cornerstone of your organization."
