Buyable: Your Guide to Building a Self-Managing, Fast-Growing, and High-Profit Business Kindle Edition
by Steve Preda (Author), Jason Anscomb (Illustrator), Yasser Hawas (Illustrator), Derek Botten (Narrator) Format: Kindle Edition
4.8 out of 5 stars
HOW TO MAKE YOUR BUSINESS A SPRINGBOARD TO YOUR IDEAL LIFE
A business that is buyable is a business that people are looking to buy. It's not about selling it however, but making it an investment asset.
In reality, 85percent out of 1,700,000. US companies employing between 10 and 250 employees cannot be bought (i.e. financially viable). They are gone within a mere 10 years.
This book offers you the A-to Z guideline for avoiding this fate and build an organization that is worthwhile and, in many cases, enjoyable to manage, and also worthwhile to keep.
Specifically, Buyable guides you through the process of creating a company that is self-managed, rapidly growing and extremely profitable. It includes:
The goal to be set Is there a ideal scenario that you would like to create with your company?
Analyzing your current business and determining the value you must create to earn the money required to finance Your Ideal Life.
Organising your business to ensure that it is self-managing and follows an ongoing growth and profit direction. You can speed up this process by choosing the Management Blueprint that fits your business.
How do you master the essentials of establishing an effective business.
How can you boost your business's growth by designing value drivers.
Dressing your business in an "harvesting" transaction and executing the sale and/or recapitalization (optional) without dropping your shirt or losing your head.
How to exit your company with a smile. Your options and your mindset while you transition the business into new owners.
The author tells more than 100 personal stories from his experience as a business owner as well as an investment banker and business coach. He has been in many cases , changing names to safeguard innocent people.
The book also offers access to digital tools to assist you in determining what you want to achieve in your Ideal Lifestyle, Magic Number, the worth of your current as well as future venture, and an in-depth buyability Assessment tool.
This book is essential for any entrepreneur or business owner. I'm sure this book will last for a long time and be a classic in business along with other top guides from Gino Wickman Geoffrey Moore, and Guy Kawasaki.
Matthew Laherty, CEO of Platformatics
A thorough knowledge of how to build an organization, improve its performance, develop processes, and finally make it in place to sell in the form of an asset.

Self-managing businesses put the business owners in charge of finding the perfect buyer at the right time, and with the most optimal or highest value. Steve offers a method to build a profitable business and a fulfilling life for the founders who have read his latest book.

Preda provides in a concise and easy-to-read prose, the qualities that enable a business to be bought and the methods that can be employed to chart an approach to achieve that goal. Being a frequent participant in exits from businesses, I can confidently say that this book is a must-read.

Steve has done an amazing job in capturing the most important factors that make a company profitable - and also sellable in a digestible and actionable format. I would like to see more business owners had this before approaching me to buy!

The book was well written, interesting and was clearly written by an expert in the field. It is always interesting to get the details behind the deals, what works and what brings a deal to fail. No two buyers or sellers are alike and the anecdotes made the book that much more flavorful. It was also valuable to learn more about international and cross-border deals, areas in which I lack knowledge.
As someone who is intimately familiar with the subject matter, I did have one point that I feel needs more substantiation. The insinuation that only one in 12 businesses is really sellable, does not fit with what I see every day. I am not sure I would support the Statista findings - does this data capture all sales including mergers, employee buyouts, kids buying out their parents, etc.?

Well written, Well Researched ...The best book on How to grow a "Self Managing" Business

The author had great real life stories and experiences. I love the fact that it was well researched and covered the 10 Management Systems in the market from Scaling Up, EOS, Great Game of Business, E-Myth and 4 Disciplines of Execution. Covered a ton yet made it simple and understandable.
I also liked the online resources he shared.
A couple of the stories maybe were used too often but nothing that detracted from the book.

If you do this, and follow Steve's suggestions, you'll build a very "buyable" business that will ensure that you achieve your financial goals and even financial freedom. Be sure to take his assessments to find out the value of your business and then you can predict the future value so you can plan for your future retirement. This book answers many questions that aren't shared in business school or in many entrepreneurial training organizations. In fact, you should read it more than once since there are many solid, helpful pieces of advice for you to glean from Steve's wisdom.

Good, insightful look at starting, growing and selling a Buyable Business
Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2021
Steve Preda takes his decades of experience, research and statistical data to walk the reader through not only the lift of building a "Buyable" business, but also the pit falls and opportunities that can arise along the way. Many books in the business management world - commit to a "one size fits all" or this is the newest fad and try to debunk or only pitch ONE way to do things. Without focusing on only one management style, Preda highlights the main concepts/theories that have been adopted and adapted over the past century and gives them all equal and fair consideration. Then highlights specific examples from his M&A background or business coaching experience.
At times it can get a bit technical and distracting with some of the stories but overall his direct interaction from both his European and American negotiations play into his explanation of how to layout the plan of starting, building and orchestrating a Buyable Business.

I only wish this book had been available 20 years ago when I started my first company. I made just about every mistake Steve warns against. Instead of owning a company, I ended up owning a job. It made money, don't get me wrong, but it required my full time dedication. Did I mention I already had a full time job at the time? And the new "job" never made as much money as the old job, so I couldn't quit. I guess my exit plan was to drop dead from overwork.
That company still exists, on paper, at any rate. And I did manage to quit the very high-paying Director job, on my own terms. This was thanks to my subsequent company which uses capital to make more capital, requiring only an hour or so of my attention a day. The rest of my time is my own. Having my money work instead of me, and wrapped in a corporate structure I own, is pure bliss. I could have used Steve's book with that company, too, but I luckily avoided most of the mistakes thanks to that first company. I'm not anywhere near wanting to cash out, but I could. And with this book, I can fix the few things I didn't get right to make it an even easier and more expensive sell.
Steve offers a crystal clear blueprint for the creation of companies that have value independent of you, so that they may be sold at a future time, and you can cash out at multiples of what you put in. As important is the fact that the company can continue operating successfully, and even continue to grow, adding value for the new owners, the employees, and the customers. This is the kind of stuff that high paid consultants charge hundreds of thousands of dollars to do for you. Kudos to Steve for making it available to everyone.
The book also comes with a large number of real life examples to illustrate the book's points. Seriously. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in consulting fees, and that's on the low end. If you are planning on starting a business, you need this book so you do it right. If you already have a company, you need this book so you can turn your company into a valuable asset someone will want to buy. If you don't own a company, get it anyway. It's a great read, and this is knowledge worth having, regardless. Maybe you can even charge a few hundred thousand dollars in consulting fees to someone for simply applying this book.
Bottom line, buy this book!

This book may become a classic!
Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2021
A valuable and practical guide for anyone who wants to start, grow, and maximize the potential of any business. The book is well-organized, well-illustrated, and well-referenced. The author clearly has vast experience and knowledge and has done his homework in writing this book. Theory and application are intertwined to make reading both interesting and informative. The most important parts of the book are the step-by-step instructions regarding how to build, self-manage, and profit from a business.
To me, one of the most important aspects to building a Buyable business is to keep meticulous records of all business activities, as emphasized by the author. Many business owners are so busy “running” their business that they neglect the record keeping. Such neglect can come back to haunt you. The owner of a Buyable business has all his/her ducks in a row.
The author’s writing style is to the point, always staying focused on the essential concepts. As well, he discusses the principles of managing a business in the larger perspective of one’s entire life. This is an important concept, because one cannot separate the professional and personal aspects of their life. Readers who are familiar with Napoleon Hill’s classic book, "Think and Grow Rich” may sense a hint of some underlying philosophy from that great work. (But without all of Hill’s boring repetition).
The one thing I would have liked to see more of in the book is a thorough discussion of the Hawthorne Effect and the great leverage present in the relationships between manager and employees revealed by the Hawthorne Studies. However, this does in no way detract from the main message of the book.
After 30 years of running various businesses, as well as serving as an Organizational Behavior Consultant and College Professor, I would declare that this is one of the very best books of its genre. Wish I had had this book when I started my first business more than 30 years ago. But I am now familiar with all of the concepts of this book, find them to be sound, and encourage any business owner to read it; don’t learn it the hard way through years of experience. Read this book, apply it’s principles, and success, in my opinion, is guaranteed!

A Must-Read for Every Business Owner
Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2021
As a reader, I found Buyable to be written with first-hand experience, passion, and and a genuine desire for the reader to walk away with a strong concept on how to build a business to be purchased from the get-go. This means understanding key management principles by esteemed leaders (both current and historic), knowing what your "magic number" is, and ultimately cashing in to achieve your ideal life.
The book is loaded with tables, graphics, and visuals to help readers better grasp complex subjects. I'd say that it's a book geared more for established CEOs than bootstrapping entrepreneurs, but the subject definitely applies to all business owners. If you're looking to build a buyable business, this is the book for you!

Parachute instructions for baby-boomer business owners
Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2021
This book could be a wake-up call for owners who assume their business is valuable to anyone else. With over half of the nation's private businesses owned by baby-boomers, these businesses and their employees are at risk unless they can successful sell or transition their business. Most won't because they don't know what buyers are looking for and how to make their business "buyable".
This book provides a clear outline of the action steps and best practices to help them plan, manage and realize the financial value of the business they've created. I particularly like the section on how organizational operating systems (EOS, Scaling Up, etc) create a framework for clarifying a common vision, creating team focus, organizational discipline and key measures. If you have a business you're counting on to land safely in retirement, this book provide the parachute instructions.

A true practitioner's book on small business M&A
Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2022
There are a good number of books on owning / operating / selling small businesses. Many are written by journalists. I have nothing against journalists but they just don't have the operating experience to do justice to the topic.
Steve lived the journey as both an M&A advisor and then also as a principal when attempting to sell his own advisory business. So he's got a personal connection to the topic both through his profession and through the trials of selling his own business.
It's highly readable, and you can jump around from chapter to chapter for referencing after you've read it once. It's also quite intimate in that Steve shares some of his personal failures in his career journey, and his openness about that creates credibility and reinforces that business ownership is hard, and that exiting businesses isn't a straight line or an easy path.
I have no vested interest in writing this positive review. I am writing the review to endorse a book that is written by an operator who has been there and done that, has lived to tell the tale, and hasn't swept his failures under the rug. It's an easy read and every entrepreneur will get a couple memorable takeaways from reading Buyable. Thanks to Steve Preda for putting himself and the book out there for the rest of us to benefit.

Your business must be buyable even if you don't intend to sell it
Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2021
Buyable grabs you by the lapels and won't let go. It argues persuasively that business owners must build buyable businesses, even if they never intend to sell, because a buyable business is a fun and profitable business. As another author writes, "If you don’t do it excellently, don’t do it at all. Because if it’s not excellent, it won’t be profitable or fun, and if you’re not in business for fun or profit, what the hell are you doing there?" (Robert Townsend, "Up the Organization.")
Author Steve Preda's been there and done that, and he has dozens of compelling stories with real company and owner names to back up his points. You'll also benefit from his comprehensive review of management blueprints like Traction, Scaling Up, and E-Myth.
You'll need to listen at at least 1.7x speed so you can quickly finish it, and then listen again. I'm on my second listen, and I expect a third.

Great instruction manual on getting your business ready to be acquired
Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2021
I meet a lot of business owners who want to sell their business 'down the road.' Many are not sure how to go about it, and struggle to remove themselves from daily operations. The author has created a strong case that the business needs to be made healthy, growth-oriented, and capable of sustaining its trajectory once the owner has stepped away. I particularly liked the sections focused on value creation - the nuts & bolts approach is very easy to follow, and the sections on Management Blueprint are spot on. I also appreciate the point that an 'exit' does not need to necessarily be a sale - it can simply be the owner stepping into an inactive role while someone else runs the business.
Very well done!

It was a true eye opener to understand the array of implementable processes how to drive growth and value with an end goal reaching your ideal life you desire. I can only recommend this inspiring book both for business owners as well as corporate individuals as it will truly get you thinking what areas you might miss currently that worth to focus on creating a better version of your business.

Prada is an engaging writer with extraordinary business experience and insights. The first part of the book is very motivating which makes it easier to get through the very serious second part. The second part of the book about execution will inspire any business owner to either improve their management skills or outsource that work to the best people you can find. Extremely well written and nuanced, "Buyable" will appeal to business owners of all sizes.

I've read a lot of business building books and this is one of the better ones. The stories are helpful and helps the book flow nicely. Also, it's not all regurgitated ideas from other books. It helps to learn this from a guy who has a lot of experience with the exact topic which is refreshing. I will definitely be recommending this book to business owners.

I just finished reading Buyable and consider it time well spent. Mr. Preda hits the mark that business valuations are based upon data and recognized business principles - it has been my experience that many business owners don't know the true value of their business. Whether you intend to sell your business or not, following the principles shared in this book will add value to your largest asset. I highly recommend.

I loved all of the stories and examples in Steve's book. It is so easy to run your business, reacting to what's happening "in" the moment, vs being strategic, building value, and planning your exit. Steve's book is a great reminder that we should be looking at our business as part of our overall retirement plan! The accompanying websites and worksheets were super helpful as well.
