So when he announced he was publishing a book, I jumped at the chance for an advance copy so I could devour even more of his brilliant guidance. (The cover on the advance copy is different from the final version, so don't get confused by the photos.)
The book did not disappoint (of course). I love the step-by-step layout of the book with a very specific 27-day roadmap for how to discover your side hustle mission all the way through to launch date and beyond. The advice is practical and down to earth with direction like "launch before you think you're ready and adjust as you go." You can't let perfectionism hold you back if you want a side hustle to be a success. And don't worry if things don't work out the first time, Chris gives you lots of tips on how to evaluate your launch and make changes for the next iteration.
Did it work for me? Yep. I'm already earning some extra money on the side. As soon as I got the book I grabbed a blank notebook and carried it with me wherever the Side Hustle book went so I could craft my own side hustle plan (I even took it to the beach a couple times for some educational reading). I’ve heard this (okay, I’ve been that person) so many times. There is so much mythology and complexity around what it takes to go from idea to income. In the world of entrepreneurship, the lore has become, “you’ve gotta be all-in, all the time” if you want to succeed. Truth is, that’s a complete fiction. And, what if you don’t so much want to built the next mega-company, but instead would love to just do something you enjoy on the side that also happens to generate a nice bit of extra cash?
That’s where Chris Guillebeau’s Side Hustle steps in. The term “side hustle” has become all the rage these days, but for Guillebeau, it’s the way he’s lived his life and earned his income for more than a decade. As a friend and colleague, I’ve watched from the sidelines as he’s repeated the process many times, getting better and faster with each iteration (and often looked on in awe). And, I was excited to receive a copy to dive into and learn from.
In the book, Chris draws upon his deep well of experience starting different side hustles, then blends that knowledge with the experiences and case-studies of people from many walks of life to distill a step-by-step methodology based on what actually works in the real world. He offers a roadmap that takes you from idea to tested and implemented side hustle in a remarkably short period of time.
What I really love is the level of granular action-taking. An Excellent Action Plan for Financial Independence!

I don't always review the purchases I make on Amazon, but I am delighted to do so in this case. I have been reading Chris Guillebeau since his first book, the $100 Startup. I find his writing style very enjoyable, his advice actionable and his enthusiasm for the topic really inspiring. Ever since reading the $100 Startup, I have wanted to do some sort of income-generating project on my own. I guess that places me in the ranks of "wantrepreneur" rather than entrepreneur, and I can accept that. I have either been too busy, too tired or too overwhelmed with my day job to actually take the steps to get started on a side hustle. His latest book will help me finally get moving, I think.
In early January, I started following Chris' very ambitious and excellent daily(!) podcast. The various stories of hard-working people wanting to find a bit more opportunity and a bit more financial independence really helped rekindle my interest in starting something on the side. When he announced his book, I knew I had to have it.
The book meshes very well with the podcast, and they complement each other nicely. There are many things I really appreciate about how the writer approaches this topic:
1. His ideas are actionable. Even for someone who is busy with their main occupation. The 27 days are laid out in a logical, easy to follow sequence. They are broken down so that although every day some concrete progress is made, it is not particularly overwhelming. One of the real challenges many people face when launching a side hustle project is the somewhat overwhelming list of things that need to be done. This book provides an excellent framework to follow.
2. His ideas are presented heuristically - he doesn't encourage the reader to slavishly copy the examples in the book of a particular side hustle. Instead, he wants the reader to look at it as an example of an approach or technique of income generation. He understands that everyone is different, and not every side hustle is right for each individual. He strongly encourages the readers to take the *principle* from his example, and consider how it may be adapted to better suit that particular reader. I really feel that this principal-centered approach is vital for a side hustle to succeed.
3. He is very much focused on the reader's needs. Throughout the book, he encourages the reader to consider what kind of side hustle is right for him/her. Some thoughtful self-reflection in the planning stage can prevent a lot of regret later on. Reminding the reader of that is core to the values of the book.
4. He is entirely correct in his views about traditional work. He clearly shows the reader that the financial security and peace of mind the extra income a side hustle can bring makes it worth exploring. Things are changing so rapidly these days. Long gone are the days where you could feel secure with a single source of income. It is most likely going to stay that way for the foreseeable future.
Mr. Guillebeau always concludes his podcast episodes with, "Inspiration is good, but inspiration with action is so much better." I think this book will both inspire you AND help you take the logical, actionable, incremental steps necessary to achieve a bit of financial independence! Buy this book!

I have been listening to the Side-hustle podcast from the beginning, and have been exposed to all kinds of fun and interesting project ideas. Even those things that I would never want to do myself (dropship sales, bicycle tour guide, bug wholesaler...) I still come away with tidbits of universal wisdom.
I bought this book expecting repetition between the book and the podcast, but there is a lot more there as well. Plus, he has collected in one place all the resources he and his side-hustlers use to get stuff done.
Why I have been encouraging my millennial kids that the gig economy is the future, and not the other way around I don't really know! But having the various side-hustle concepts organized into a book makes it easier to share with them and others.

Thoroughly enjoyed this clear, concise layout of the step-by-step process to find a side hustle. Plenty of examples of real people who've done it. I especially liked the part the very first step: start out just looking around you for a need or a problem. It's like those money booths on a game show where you step inside, a blower turns on, and you get one minute to grab all the bills blowing around you. Except people's problems and needs are around you every minute of every day--you just have to pay attention, and then grab something that you can solve or help people with.

I love the real life stories in this book about people making money with their side hustle, breaking out of ruts, and improving lives.
It's so doable. Guillebeau sets out very precise and clear steps to follow day by day. I've had an idea for three years, no follow-through. I've made more progress in the last 2 days than I did in all 3 years.
Excellent investment for anyone with even a glimmer of an idea. Or if you don't have an idea, but you're dissatisfied with the status quo. Or you've got a yearning to expand beyond the 9-5 rut--without giving up the security of your day job.

As a newer fan of the podcast Side Hustle School, I was wondering what his book could offer that I hadn't already learned from $100 Start Up and the episodes.
Turns out, quite a lot!
Chris's step by step break down of the ACTIONS a prospective side hustler should take is the best part of the book. His crisp writing made it an easy read--I couldn't take it step by step until I'd read the book all the way through. Now I'm excited to go back and implement my best idea by following his 27 day plan.
The illustrations of successful hustlers are encouraging but also help clarify the principles and tools Chris recommends.
This is a roadmap, not necessarily the complete end all or be all of entrepreneurship. The book won't answer every question you might have, but it can certainly help you plot your course.

I have come away from all of his books feeling they were all worth the time and expense. That is not that common these days.

After reading this book, I realized I wished I read this book ten years ago. It’s a great way to minimize your risk and see what idea you have works and what doesn’t.
Granted there’s a lot more to starting a side business but the thinking part of starting an business to validate your idea is what this book is all about.
Now I’m gonna reread this book again and take notes before I start my side hustle. Link the concepts to the ideas I have making them more concrete. You should too.

Quick, informative, EMPOWERING read

I've been coming up with 'side hustle' ideas (and failing in mostly spectacular fashion) since high school - always knew that this was a mindset (and not an internal chemical error) and can be profitable if properly channeled. I read this book on my breaks during the day job, and it was like having a beer with Chris while he smacked me over and over again with a phone-book of common sense and empowering uplifting contagious examples. Seriously. After reading through it once, I've launched my side hustle and am looking forward to buying the first actual round of pints whenever I end up meeting this guy. Comes with OUTSTANDING resources as well. Not everyone has it in them, but if you do... get the book.

Met Chris in Atlanta and it's amazing how much he knows about the topic of side hustles. I think he can analyze in a heartbeat what's wrong with your idea, or come up with a better alternative. This book will show you clear steps to take your idea to fruition and the side hustle examples are an inspiration to keep trying! I also read his $100 Startup, and that one is a gem too!

I am a regular listener of Side Hustle School and I enjoyed this book from Chris Guillebeau. I was delighted to meet him in person in Minneapolis for his book tour. This book has a lot of useful advice, and I zipped through it quickly the first time around. I am now working my way through the process, so that I am taking action rather than just learning about the concept. Hopefully I will be able to check back with Chris in 3-12 months to report on my success!

Such a great book for people who are looking to start a side hustle and don't know how to get their ideas off the ground. If you're a procrastinator that is filled with entrepreneurial dreams, this book is for you. Chris walks you through the steps from idea to income. Really great book, I have launched three ideas already that are bringing in income. I’ve also purchased for friends, so they can realize their ideas too! Stop procrastinating and get this book, so you can launch your side hustle too!

Excellent book with clear, actionable, bite-sized steps. I also love the accompanying podcast, which offers short 10-minute daily episodes that each feature a different person's successful side-hustle and point out lessons to be learned from each. It's great inspiration and education. Some of the podcast episodes are identical to some of the stories in the book, but there is so much additional content in both that each still provides great value.

I'm firmly convinced that side hustles are a smart and do-able option to increase freedom and income. This book is great. I also listen to Chris's daily Side Hustle podcast. The combo is so inspiring.
I can't wait to get my idea(s) off the ground. My problem has been that I've way, way, way overthought them and so they have remained in constant planning, thinking mode - literally for years/decades. Chris made me look at the process differently and it's liberating to read about and hear how others kept it simple - or simpler.

I recently became unemployed and always considered a side hustle, but never had the time due to travel.
Now that I don't have the primary job distraction, and after reading this book and gaining valuable insights, I feel I have some great insights.

This book is laid out so well! It's great for anyone transitioning careers or thinking of venturing solo. Once you start reading it, you won't want to put it down. I work with people making major career changes all the time so I know the ideas shared in this book do work, including the super easy "$10 to validate your idea" listed in the back of the book. It's pure gold and so worth the read, re-read, and scribbling all over!

I checked out 12 start up books from the library.
Eleven books got thumbed thru and a couple notes taken from the lot of them: basically they were written to make the authors money, not to show you how to make money, no matter what the title claims. 😢
This book I purchased the same day and returned all 12 to the library, satisfied I'd gotten the correct title after all! 🤗

This isn't a "6 weeks to multimillion freedom." This is a step by step process to get some freedom along the way.

I've read and reread Chris's $100 Startup many times over the years and am delighted that he's turned his attention to part-time time gigs for ordinary people. His use of a simple idea evaluation system should help many make wise hustle decisions. I added a 6th criterion to his - risk. If your considering launching a side business, you must read this book!

Amazing Lessons for an Entry-Level Entrepreneur

I am currently a student at the University of Northern Colorado and would highly recommend this book for any student or motivated individual who is even slightly interested in pursuing a side hustle. After taking some entrepreneurship courses at my business school, I have come to the realization that entrepreneurship is not something to be taught in a classroom! Your time will be better spent actually DOING something you are passionate about and this book serves as a guide to do exactly that! Day by day, you will have the opportunity to take your ideas further supported by Chris Guillebeau's witty narrative and advice.

Chris does a great job of detailing how to start a side hustle, where to find ideas through the power of observation, and how to launch via a detailed 27-day plan. I've been toying with a side hustle for a few years and this book finally made me do it. I realized I had a right now business and a path to add a next level business in the near future. I teach entrepreneurship and this is the gold standard. The hardest thing to overcome is the fear that your business will fail. Chris shows you how to systematically limit your risk and put you in the best position to launch your side hustle. Launch your side hustle and understand that if it doesn't work, come back to this book and follow the process with your next idea. If you already have a side hustle, this book will help reevaluate what you're currently doing. After you read it, make sure you get the additional resources on Chris' website. This is a great book and a wonderful complement to the daily Side Hustle School podcast. It is a nice balance between being easy and interesting while also having enough detail to make it actionable. I can't think of one person who wouldn't really appreciate this book.

This is a great step by step walk through of how to launch a business. It addresses how to come up with ideas, how to tell if your idea is feasible, preparing for liftoff and assuring payment. To sum up Chris's view - jump and learn to fly on the way down.

I loved every page of Side Hustle by Chris Guillebeau! Guillebeau gave a great approach on how to turn your side hustle from idea to reality. He guides you with examples from start to finish. Every page was filled with great REALISTIC insight on side hustles. 5/5 would recommend!

Chris is the master of the side hustle, and his books are always super helpful. If you are thinking about starting a side hustle (or five!), grab this book. The step-by-step instructions are great for anyone. Just understand that you have to follow through with all the steps in order for it to work.

This book provided me with some great information and inspiration, to expand on my current side hustle game. I have been a side hustler for most of my life, but reading this book gave me the extra push to do more and explore those next level side hustles.

Bought the book back in June 2017 but just read it now in November. This is not a book to read only. You must do each step and I think you will be blown away with how easy Chris makes each step. Well, maybe not easy but so doable by someone who want so start a Side Hustle that can lead to a a full-time gig that pays you more than you're making now. Buy it and be ready to do each step and you will not regret it!

This book is full of meat and potatoes. No fluff. Case studies are shown, discussed and dissected into steps that really spell it out for anyone trying to get a side hustle going. I highhhhhly recommend his other book and $100 Start up.
