A lot of people are terrified about being on stage and speaking in front of the crowd more than they are scared of dying. It's a must event if you wish to make it in the world. It could be a business presentation to advance your career or a speech at the classroom, or a toast to your friend's wedding. The fear of speaking can be a problem. But it doesn't have to. The place you are not the place you must be.

The following sentence is part of my introduction. Do you believe in it? Do you trust yourself? Perhaps a part of you believes it. If you didn't, you wouldn't be here! Let's make this a reality. Spend a few minutes and whisper the words that immortalize the classic tale, The Little Engine That Could, "I think I can. I believe I'm able. I think I'm able."

Are you having trouble? Are you prone to dwelling with negative thinking? "It's not going to work for me." "I'm just not a good speaker." "I'm an introvert. I'm just not able to." "I've experimented it in the past, but it was unsuccessful."

If you're finding it difficult to believe, when will you start to suspend doubt?

I suggest that you go through this text as a fervent believer rather than as a skeptical person. Education can help you think in a critical manner. Maintain that attitude for your academic and professional life. If you want to improve your communication skills, you have to be able to comprehend this information. Change any negative thoughts to positive energy. Be positive about yourself. Be confident in yourself. You can put your faith in yourself by implementing this book.

Utilize these strategies to prepare yourself for success in your speaking career, your profession, and in your daily life

Not just another public speaking book

Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2019

As an author of a public speaking book and an avid reader of anything related to mastering the art of public speaking, I've been through my fair share of public speaking books that just rehash the same old concepts that have been around since man has been speaking. Not only will the information be vanilla but the delivery will be boring and unengaging. You’ll wonder how you’ll ever get through the book when you’re struggling to get through the first few pages.

But then there’s Mike Acker. You can tell he’s a great speaker just by how he delivers the material he wants to get across to the reader (his audience). He expertly interweaves stories and analogies that make the book enjoyable to read at a level that you actually forget you’re learning something. Great speakers do that very same thing on stage. Their focus is fully on the audience to make sure the people who have granted their time and attention toward the speaker receives the best experience.

Great speakers care about their audience and the audience can feel it.

Mike cares about his readers in that same way to make sure you have the best experience going through his book. He knows if you take what he’s teaching to heart, he can change your life.

However, even Mike doesn’t expect you to finish the book and magically become a fearless public speaker. Mike has laid out actionable steps you need to take to put what you are learning into practice to truly benefit from what he is teaching.

Don’t skip the steps! If you don’t take the steps, if you don’t take action—nothing changes.

Since you’re reading this review, that most likely means you’re considering getting the book which also tells me you want something in your life to change. I assure you, if you put into action the steps in this book, your life will never be the same (in a great way!).

It will be worth every penny. It will be worth every minute you put into the book.

There will be no time wasted here.

Buy the book.

Practical & Actionable Steps to Overcome Fear of Public Speaking

Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2019

Verified Purchase

Being an eloquent speaker is not necessarily something you are born with. It's actually something you can learn, cultivate and hone. As the author, Mike Acker so aptly puts: "Believe in yourself. Where you are is not where you have to be."

Many of the most gifted speakers that we see and admire - such as Warren Buffet, actually took public speaking lessons and have attributed that to much of his success. I love the fact that the author shares relatable experiences and struggles he has had with public speaking. Some of the very same struggles I am currently overcoming: Anxiety, nervousness, fear and just wanting to dive in a hole and just stay there rather than speak to a crowd of people. But as said in the book: "if you want to change your perspective, invest in your preparation, and take time to practice, then you will overcome your fear of public speaking." I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for practical and actionable strategies in overcoming the fear of public speaking. It is indeed possible.

This is one area I determined I was lacking, probably worse than I let myself realize. I'd get nervous and anxious in front of large groups at work, around upper management, and around women I was attracted to. It all ties together and boils down to social anxiety. Being in a leadership role these are things I must face on a daily basis so I picked up this book to help understand and overcome or cope with these feelings. The book is very comprehensive and presents things in a valuable way. It also provides steps and actions you can start using immediately to transform your fear into passion and use it to drive you forward with confidence. This book and the principles in it have already helped me tremendously, just make sure you are taking action, you can't improve in this area without exposure & practice, the more the better!!

Ok. I thought this book may be helpful for any public speaking I may do in the future, but I expected it to be dry and boring with bullet points on how to get from point A to point B. Instead, I found not only a platform to increase my confidence in public speaking but a Life platform. So many components included in this book on public speaking can be used successful in all aspects of my life. I enjoyed the author sharing his past experiences as well as those from who he has helped. This book was far and away different than my expectations and I'm thrilled it turned out this way. To be honest, I gobbled up the book in one setting to read what he had to offer. I plan on reading it again to LEARN all that he had to give. I think I will re-read this book many times, it is that useful!

Thorough Coverage of the Topic

Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2020

As Jerry Seinfeld put it, the average person at a funeral would rather be the one in the casket than the one delivering the eulogy. The fear of public speaking is that visceral for us. So this topic, Speak with No Fear, is an important one for many people. It's also a complex topic. As a hypnotherapist, I'm very aware of how public speaking raises ALL the basic fears--fear of rejection, fear of humiliation, fear of being ridiculed. And all of this in public, for anyone to see. In addition to being complex, the fear of public speaking is also individual. There is no one approach that solves the problem for everyone.

For me, the best part of Mike Acker's book is that he provides seven strategies to choose from rather than trying to force-fit everyone into one model. These strategies range from the psychological to the spiritual to the practical and together cover all the syndromes I've encountered in my practice. The other element of this book I appreciate is the "Action" section that is part of each strategy. In other words, this isn't just an academic think-piece; it is a workbook for conquering fear.

This book is focused on fear of public speaking but several of the strategies are more widely applicable. And a couple strategies are good, practical advice on how to write and deliver a powerful speech. For example, "You Be You" is sound advice for anyone. "Speak to One" is imperative for all speakers. So the book is not narrow in scope but rather broad enough to cover the topic thoroughly and usefully.

Sometimes you read books that are inspiring, other times you read those that are practical. This book is one of those great finds that is both.

The author shares his personal struggles with speaking - many that all of us go through like embarrassment, saying the wrong thing, and turning as red as a tomato on stage - and how he rose to eventually overcome them and now speaks to crowds of thousands.

His story is inspiring and the conversational tone of the book sounds like the author is giving you a pep talk and he believes in you. And best of all, there are lots of practical steps and tactics to back up his message. If you want to become a public speaker, this book is a great choice.

I bought this book to help prepare for some upcoming speaking engagements. Public speaking has never been my thing , no matter how many times I have done it. I agreed with points the author makes: Prepare, prepare, prepare (and how to), show up early, smile. However he brings up other pointers that I was not aware of and will definitely incorporate in my routine (don't want to give away too much). It's an easy read and he shares his emotions and embarassing situations. What was really interesting to learn is, even with all his experience, he still uses these strategies for every speech! Thanks for writing such a practical book.

Like many of us, speaking in front of others has never been my strong suit. I have long believed that some of us simply are not the "type" to be able to speak in front of a group with skill and poise. After reading this book, I am certain that I can grow in this area and become the competent and self-assured speaker that I've desired to be.

The author's experience with many types of public speaking really shines in this book, and he positively de-mystifies what it takes to gain proficiency in this area. This book is full of practical, easy-to-follow advice, as well as real-life stories from his experience speaking that illustrate his content with humor and memorable lessons. This book is not the dry script that you might expect from a book on public speaking.

Lastly, I was thoroughly surprised by the potential applications of the content. I read this book hoping to gain insight into becoming an effective and confident speaker, but what I drew from it surely surpassed that. Many of the practices referenced in the book can easily be implemented in daily life to help the reader become a more confident and capable person in general.

Would definitely recommend.

The Most Helpful Public Speaking Book I've Read!

One thing that I think makes a great "help" book is for the book to be written by someone who has been in my shoes. This book was awesome! You can tell the author has been through the fears of public speaking so he understands how his readers are feeling. The book touched on all of the issues I've faced when public speaking and very real-life and practical ways to alleviate those issues. I think anyone who has suffered anxiety or fear in regards to public speaking will find this book very helpful. Whether you are giving a presentation in front of 1,000 people or are giving a best man / maid of honnor speech at someone's wedding, this book will no doubt help you!

"Just as we cover up emotional wounds, we cover up past public speaking wounds." - This one makes so much sense for me because we avoid public speaking because of the wounds we've received from prior speaking experience.

"Over the years, I have offended people, used the wrong word, left out context, forgotten my place in my notes, used "uh" far too many times, rapidly paced the stage, and performed hundreds of other mistakes" - This is one of those, "i've been there moments that I really enjoyed about this book. The book wouldn't be helpful if the author was constantly writing about how perfect of a speaker they had always been. It was nice that he understood the fears that I had faced and dealt with.

A book for any kind of speech, fear, personality, or experience level

Mr. Acker uses great analogies and stories to get his point across. In his book, he says...

"When I gave my speech to the class, I didn’t die of a heart attack, but I didn’t inspire my audience, either."

That was an ah-ha moment for myself, to inspire others with our words. He also advised...

"If you change your perspective, invest in your preparation, and take time to practice, then I promise you, you will overcome your fear of public speaking."

Basically, look at it from another point of view and that preparation is key!

He spoke of a heartfelt time when he was led to give hope to a community of approximately 3,000 people who experienced a tragic loss of 5 neighbors. Grief brought them together and his courage to speak gave them peace.

It's times like these, when we get out of our comfort zone, that something amazing can happen if we let go of our fears and follow our heart.

This is more than your typical "learn how to speak in public" book. This book is inspiring in many aspects. It tells relatable anecdotes about confronting your fears and dealing with emotional pain. One could interpret this book as being more about self-help than public speaking, which makes it one great page-turner! The author is clearly well-spoken and knows what he is talking about. He also clearly draws on plenty of experience. Overall, this is an extremely well-written guide to life under the guise of a public speaking book.

I think the most useful tip in this book is when you are speaking to a crowd you are actually speaking to only one person. Crowds are scary, people are friends. I like the author had been mercilessly bullied as a child and in order to overcome my own fear of speaking had similar processes as what he outlines in this book. It's worth a look.

I felt as if I was having coffee with the author as he was telling me his riveting experiences of public speaking. Candid storytelling is interwoven with many tips on how to face associated fears. Action Steps for each of the 7 strategies make it tangible for one to become more observant of trigger thoughts and to build courage to embrace, diminish, and digest fears of public speaking. I particularly liked how so much of the content of the book encouraged a positive mindset using specific real life examples.
