As a musician and an entrepreneur I can see how tempo, dynamics, changing keys, handling transitions can relate to creating a funnel with a hook, story and offer that is creative and relational. Knowing the pieces and knowing the entire piece are two different things and many entrepreneurs often put the pieces together in a disjointed fashion. Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen

Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

Donald Miller (Author, Narrator), HarperCollins Leadership (Publisher)

4.7 out of 5 stars

5,775 ratings

New York Times best-selling author Donald Miller uses the seven common elements of compelling stories to help listeners significantly improve their communication with their customers and build their business.

Donald Miller's StoryBrand method is a tried and tested solution to the problems that leaders in the business world face when they talk about their companies. This unique method of engaging with customers provides them with the most competitive edge by revealing the key to making their customers aware of the benefits of their ideas, products, or services. The creation of an StoryBrand accomplishes this by educating listeners on the seven universal stories that all people react to, the true motives behind why customers buy products and how to simplify a company's message to make it easier for people to understand, and how to design the most effective message for brochures, websites or social networks.

If you're your marketing manager for a multibillion-dollar business or the proprietor of a small-scale company or politician who is running for office or the singer of a rock group. creating the foundation of a StoryBrand can forever change your way of talking about your identity as well as what you do and the unique value that you offer your customers.

Great whether you're a copywriting pro or a complete novice

I’ve been a professional writer and copywriter for 50 years now. I’ve written fiction and nonfiction books, articles, blog posts, and a boatload of marketing material. I’ve used the hero’s journey model for more than two decades. So, when I tell you that Building A Story Brand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen by Donald Miller is a book that taught me a lot, that should carry some weight.

I picked it up because a good and trusted friend told me that he thought I’d like it and learn something. At first glance, I thought it was another one of those books about the magic of the hero’s journey. Even so, I dug into it, because my friend is almost always right when he recommends a book. He sure was right this time.

Lots of people have written about how to use the hero’s journey in both storytelling and in marketing copy. This book is about writing marketing copy, especially web copy. Donald Miller does four important things that make this book unique and helpful.

He points out that you shouldn’t be the hero of the story. Many writers do that, but the customer should be the hero. OK, then, what about the company or the brand? That should be the guide. Think Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars or Haymitch from Hunger Games.

Miller also notes that if there’s no danger, there’s no story that matters. Most other writers don’t mention the danger or underplay it. But the reason we call it the” hero’s journey” is that the hero makes it through the forest when lots of other people don’t. Adding that bit on what will happen if the hero fails in his quest will make your marketing copy and your stories stronger.

If you’re used to jargon-filled marketing books, rejoice! This isn’t one of them. Miller writes good, clean prose and his experience as a screenwriter shows up in many of his clear explanations.

That’s enough right there to make this book worth buying. But Miller also lays out a process for you to use when you sit down to create your own copy. He tells you, step by step, how to execute copy that brings each one into play.

In A Nutshell

If you’re an experienced writer or copy writer, you should read Building A Story Brand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen by Donald Miller because it will give you some fresh ideas and insights. If you’re like me, you will already know a lot of what’s here, but you’ll benefit from the clear explanations and the practical how-tos.

If you’re not a pro, this is a great book for you to help you either write your own copy for your website or marketing material or evaluate the copy that other people do for you.

I own a marketing agency and we've worked with hundreds of businesses over the years. We noticed that many business owners and marketing managers invest heavily in tactics (websites, social media marketing, email marketing, etc.), but rarely have they developed a clear and compelling message that actually worked.

My team has followed Donald Miller and the StoryBrand framework for a couple years now. We've been applying it to our clients and watching them grow. Since it's a starting point in our marketing work, we make sure they have a copy of this book. It lays the framework out it simple form. Just start reading & doing. It's the #1 marketing "tool" we recommend to those who want better results from their marketing.

I've read this twice through. I have tabs (7 of them) to go back to each step to re-visit details. This is a fantastic explanation of Donald Miller's story framework for use in business. Not just marketing, not just web-sites. But you can apply these priniciples to your blogs, tweets, internal presentations, business cases...mainly because it works, everyone universally knows how to consume stories and they will pay attention if you do it right. Mr. Miller makes it easy. (PS - subscribe to his podcast, it is fantastic)

It's amazing (and a gift) that Donald Miller/the team at Story Brand are sharing the marketing framework, business building and service-focused roadmap that saved my business. I attended The Building a Story Brand HAND-ON 3-day workshop in Tennessee in 2015 and immediately implemented 7 key points. Two years later, my "marketing re-haul" still works! The changes I made help me with team communication, marketing collateral, Google Adwords, SEO tactics, on-boarding new employees and internal promotions. Clarifying my message clarified me and I am able to lead better.

What's next?

- Reread the book - and - take notes

- Hold a team meeting

- Listen to the recent podcast on the book

- Refresh "our story" (love the template and software that help this process)

- Go implement - Change our APP, launch a testimonial marketing campaign on facebook/instagram, and re-do our CRM campaigns

I'm confident and in control now, and it's not hyperbole that CLARITY got me here.

I've been listening to the StoryBrand Podcast and when I heard that Donald Miller was writing the book I instantly jumped at the chance to grab the Advance's Readers Copy. I divided right into the book which actually isn't just a quick read, but incredibly practical. With so many different examples I was able to get really clear on the messaging I was sharing video, on my social media and on my website.

I went from being incredibly confused about where to start and how to engage my audience by creating a brandscript that I can refer back to when I'm writing emails, sending out a tweet, or trying to pitch another business. I've learned so much from this small investment and recommend that every entrepreneur grabs this books.

Great book for all business owners

Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2018

As a business owner, I think a great deal about how to explain to potential customers what my company does. However, after reading Donald Miller’s exceptional book, I realized that my approach could be greatly improved. In particular, he stresses the importance of portraying the customer as the hero of the story, and presenting myself as a guide. Too many firms act like heroes, and customers want to solve their problems themselves … they just want a little direction. Since I provide financial advice, I really find that approach makes sense since ultimately, I cannot control how much money a client has, earns, or saves, and I cannot control the markets. But I can put the client on the road to success and point him in the right direction. Along with that lesson, I liked how Miller breaks down the steps necessary to frame marketing in a way that it can really help clients understand what I do. For example, I highlighted his point, “Never assume people understand how your brand can change their lives. Tell them.” Most folks have never worked with a financial advisor, so how can they understand what will happen as a result of walking into my office? I realized the importance of creating a marketing message that makes the answer very clear. In my case, I specialize in helping people in Israel open U.S. investment accounts. Of course I help with financial plans and selecting securities, but when people live outside the United States, they have a hard time opening an account in America, and I have the solution. I believe that by just having clear statements of what we do and how it can help clients, then based on Miller’s StoryBrand model, clients will self-select themselves since they’ll understand exactly what we do. Any business owner and marketing professional should take the time to go through Donald Miller’s excellent book.

When I signed up for a video marketing course a few months ago, it was recommended that we read Building a StoryBrand in addition to taking the course. I had already read this book a few years ago, but I had listened to the audiobook version. Every time it came up in conversation, I realized I really couldn’t remember much of what I had “read” before.

My marketing team decided we wanted to read a book together, so we picked this one. I thought it would be a good chance for me to refresh my memory on it, and I purchased a physical copy this time. I am really glad we picked this book!

My team built a course for CPA firm owners a few months ago. We chose to focus on that course as we read through the book. We each took our own notes then came together to build our StoryBrand BrandScript. This was an amazing exercise for us! As we discussed our notes around the 7 BrandScript questions, we shared similar responses in some areas. Where our responses differed led to some really productive conversations that are enabling us to dial in our marketing messaging.

The concepts Miller teaches are very simple yet incredibly challenging at the same time. As Steve Wolgemuth said in this book The Crucial 12, “Succinctness is difficult and requires a lot of thought.”

If you’re marketing anything, you have to read this book. And if you’re on a marketing team, I highly recommend reading it as a team and discussing what you learn so you can apply it together. Personally, I look forward to seeing how the BrandScript rolls out in our marketing materials at Summit CPA Gro

This book blew my mind

As amateurs, we tend to think of marketing like telling about a company and trying to sell something. Even experienced business people and marketers think this way.

This book may turn everything you know about marketing on its head. Be prepared to have your mind blown.

If you already know business is about helping other people reach their goals, then you may also understand marketing a business is about helping other people see and experience how the company will help them reach their goals. This book is about changing how you think about your customer and beginning to see the world and think from their perspective, then sharing about your company in all communications from that same 3rd-person perspective.

Read this book and you will never think about marketing or business (or story telling) the same way again.

Well worth the read, several times over.

I liked how the book described step by step how to create your story brand. So others would recognize you with just the mention of your name. Also how over come the the pitfalls of to little or to much. This keeps us from becoming "THOSE PEOPLE". It gives you a clear, memorable mental picture to anyone who hears your name, or sees your trademark/logo. This makes you stand out in this copycat world, and makes you unique.

Okay let me say this, I run a small business, I have many of the same type businesses around me. This book has shown be the best scenarios for helping me to make my business stand out and apart from them. When someone mentions my type of business they call our name. We have set the standard and the others try to follow. We have done this without getting in someones face, without barfing all over them and without selling them. People like us for who we are and what we stand for. That is our story brand. That's who we are, and I did it without telling you what our name is. We want to always be remembered as people who help their friends get what they want, not what someone else says they have to have.

This might be the best marketing book I have ever read. In a sense, it's an unorthodox approach, but when you stop and think about how to effectively get the message of caring across to a potential customer, it all becomes pretty clear.

Like a lot of books these days in the marketing niche, there are a fair number of opportunities for Mr. Miller to upsell you on either a course or website upgrades, but you could definitely get by with everything that is inside this book and still refine your message to increase conversions.

It was an easy read, but that's no reflection on how valuable the information actually is. I have been practicing with the seven elements of story that are detailed in the book and I feel myself becoming more comfortable with communicating the value I can bring to customers.

I got the Kindle edition and it's format does read well on my device and on my PC.

I believe you'll like the book if you're learning about Story, it's impact, and how to use it by following a simple formula -- that can get you started, and help you become a more proficient marketing story teller as you practice and continue to learn. It's easy reading and the author has done a great job in presenting his information and his story formula.

Yes, there will be pitches to buy-in to other services, workshops and advanced classes -- but, so what? You'd probably be signing up for these in other places if it wasn't offered to you here. And isn't growing your business what business is all about? And it doesn't take away from the valuable information (if used) presented in this book. The key word is 'use'.

Also, the author has an on-going podcast and will offer you some free lessons that you'd normally have to pay for. Reading and studying this book will help you gain more than you'd get if you were relying on the free stuff without the foundation presented in the book.

I prefer learning by trying true and proven to work systems -- and that's precisely what this book offers. A proven to work system for rapidly developing your Story and your talk that can be used in a multitude of situations.

I'm happy with my purchase and with what I've learned through the book.

Side note: What biz isnt going to want you to buy their bigger and better product?! Isnt that the point? I thought it was well written and very easy to follow and implement. He's not going to do the work for you if that's what the others thought! lol I've seen a 28% bounce rate decrease on my website and more "real" traffic, and they stay longer since implementing his ideas (to name a few). I will continue to use this book for breaking down different target clients and ways to be their guide vs hero.

I read someone's question about the Drip Email Campaign...the Nurture, Nurture, Nurture, Sell/CTA. They wondered what you were supposed to do after. Repeat.

I first heard Donald Miller share his StoryBrand concept at a conference a few years ago. I was mesmerized by his thoughtful approach to creating interesting and compelling marketing messages that differentiates you from a crowded marketplace. I was energized to look at all my marketing materials through this lens....and then time passed. I didn't have the follow up materials nor the inspiration to sustain my efforts.

Well, now I do! This book is just like Donald is talking directly to me. He has a methodology to look at the story that you are putting out there and to at the very least, bump it up a notch! Or completely re-write the story, which, actually is not a daunting as it seems. In one weekend, I have already written "the story" for my brand and am currently re-evaluating my marketing materials. I can already tell that they are clearer and more concise!

So, as I launch into a refresh of my website and speaker demo video in 2018, I'll be using these principles to help shape my messaging!

In fact, a lot of folks besides me are calling his Story Brand Framework revolutionary. What’s the big deal? Well, for what seems like centuries, the question, “What makes your company different?” has turned even the most concise business owners into babbling, incoherent wrecks. The Perfect Recipe to Building A Powerful Storybrand!

Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2019

Verified Purchase

Donald Miller's "Building A Storybrand" demonstrates the power of telling your brand's story in a way where you position yourself as your customer's "guide" and your customer as the "hero" of the story...YOUR STORY! The book takes the approach of storytelling much like an action hero movie. Think of Star Wars and what Yoda meant to Luke Skywalker. Sure, Luke was the story's main action hero and protagonist, but he was guided by this little green martian like creature, Yoda, who was much older and wiser. Yoda was the "Jedi Master" and Luke needed his guidance and wisdom to defeat Darth Vader and the dark side of the force. Or think of Rocky in the epic Rocky movies where his trainer, MIckey acted as Balboa's guide in coaching, nurturing him to become World Champion. The stategy of the book is much like that of a movie that takes the reader (or viewer in the case of a movie) on an emotionally, physically, or spiritually filled journey where the hero must overcome some major obstacle before he can succeed and declare victory. He frames his book (as all great action hero movies do) by indetifyng the main character (your customer), who encounters a problem, where you act as your customer's guide, equipped with a detailed action plan that calls them to take action. Along the way, your customer avoids or overcomes that "painstaking" obstacle and the story eventually ends in the success of your customer feeling a sense of accomplishment or victory! It's this form of storytelling that engages your customer and keeps and maintains their interest. As Donald Miller says in his book: "Story is the greatest weapon we have against noise, because it organizes information in such a way that people are compelled to listen."

A MUST read book for any and every business that cares about it's customers and helping them slay those dragons and win in their own action hero story!!

The perfect blend of marketing and storytelling to build your business the right way!

Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2017

I started my Internet marketing research about three years ago. I read everything I could get my hands. I've read the "classics" - Caples, Claude Hopkins, Collier, Ogilvy, you name it, I've read it. It was great to learn the basics of advertising. Their advice is still as relevant today as it was one hundred years ago. But there was still one piece missing -- storytelling.

Yes, a lot of folks give lip service to how important stories are to marketing, but nobody seems to know how to do it. So I read Blake Snyder, Hauge, Field, Trottier and the granddaddy of them all Robert McKee. Great stuff on screenwriting and story, but not much marketing meat in them. I mean, OK, I could probably have figured it out. If I shut down my business and spent another three years I could have done it. Maybe!

Fortunately, I stumbled onto Donald Miller. Suddenly everything clicked! How could this guy get it right and explain it so easily? Well, he's a storyteller for one...AND...he's built a multi-million dollar business for the other. The perfect blend -- a master storyteller who knows how to market. He's not some puff pastry who makes big dollar claims but no practical experience. Don is living proof that what he teaches works! You won't find another person with those two skills, as highly honed as Don. I know, I tried.

"Building a Story Brand" is an easy read. But don't let that fool you. It's packed from cover to cover with powerful information. The advice inside can help you take your business to the next level. And...oh yeah...this isn't like a lot of business books out there. Books that are nothing but long-form sales letters. They try to get you to buy some high priced "Do-It-For-You" service.

Of course, you can keep jumping around from one Internet "guru" to the next. Just get ready to kiss your business good-bye.

If you want to build your business the right way, this is the only marketing book you'll ever need. It's all right here. Follow what Don teaches and your business will see results.

We all love story, and when we can understand why we love it so much and what it does to us, we can take those principles and formulas and help others understand what we offer and why it's important in the marketplace. Clarity is everything, and this book will teach you how to communicate with pristine clarity. You cannot afford to pass this book over. And once you read the first few pages, you'll understand why.

This is what helps me truly get into the mindset of my ideal client and start writing the kinds of words she will connect to on an emotional level, which will help her know my service is what she is looking for. Many people struggle with how to present their content. Ineffective communication doesn't only waste time and money, but our great products and services are passed over. The StoryBrand book will help you know what (and what-not) to communication, so your valuable product or service can get to the most people. This puts money and time back in your pocket and protects you from losing out on potential sales.

That last paragraph was written very quickly using the StoryBrand framework. How'd I do? Anyway, I began listening to the StoryBrand podcast a few months ago. The advice they provide and all of their material is top notch! I was surprised to find out this marketing genius, Donald Miller, was the same Donald Miller who wrote Blue Like Jazz (a book which impacted my life around 12 years ago).

I blazed through the StoryBrand book, listening to it pretty much in a few hours at double speed. I will go back and take in the material again more slowly though later. I've been studying story and writing, and it's been very interesting to see how Don has weaved this into marketing. It is a great fit and makes perfect sense. He breaks it down really well too and gives actionable steps for implementing this into your brand, website, elevator pitch, products, marketing, and even the company mindset. The information is definitely usable and my mind is brimming with ideas of how to put it into practice.

A lot of the ideas in the book are covered in his podcast and other free material they put out. But the book goes into more detail and depth. Even though I was familiar with the ideas from listening to his other material, I came away with a much better grip on it after going through the book and felt the purchase price is far outweighed by the value of the material.

I was pleased this book does what it says it will and gives you all the strategies you'll need to implement it. That being said there are still many opportunities to buy into other services that Don and StoryBrand have to offer and calls to action are sprinkled throughout the book (I don't blame them for this and it wasn't a distraction or pushy). I've read a lot of books in this category only to find they are mainly to bait people into buying into a program. This is not the case here, although if you need more assistance (or deeper studies) to put it into practice, there are programs and services they offer.

Now I need to implement the material. I'm just getting started and thankful to have this wealth of information to get me off on the right track. I hope to come back and tell everyone how it helps me. In the meantime, check out the StoryBrand website and podcast, you won't be disappointed.

there are other books and coaching that explain essentially what Donald Miller explained in this book, however none of them have the clarity and direct straightforward instruction as this book. I do find it an interesting testament to mr. Miller clarity stance because he did what others are trying to do but with greater clarity and understanding. this book looks at the idea of telling a story and using you as a guide to your clients heroic story. as noted before others do this as well, however Mr Miller went above and beyond with specific examples and extreme clarity. This is a great testament to what Donald Miller can do because that is what he is based his business on which happens to be clarifying your message so that people can understand you and hear you. This book not only shows you how to do that for your business your service your teaching your whatever it is, it also very clearly shows you he knows what he's doing he can get you the results that you need and you finish the book wanting to work with him. I highly recommend this book if you are in any position of working with others in any form.

I have been listening to the Building a StoryBrand Podcast for almost a year now. While the podcast has shaped my thinking about messaging, this book finally helped me figure out to put what Don talks about into practice. This is a book that takes you step by step into how to clarify your message for your business. I've gone through the book multiple times to write out different Brand Scripts for different aspects of my current job and (hopefully) future job. Don almost makes it too easy so that when you're done working through his steps you think "how did I not think of that?" and "how is everyone not doing this?".

The book is well written and easy to follow along. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to craft a clear message for their business.

As someone who loves books (and stories), I’m pre-disposed to Miller’s system, but I’ve also read a million marketing books & am skeptical about “easy” business solutions. I really liked Miller’s ideas, and gives business owners plenty of resources and “meat” to create their own StoryBrand scripts, without necessarily having to pay for his workshops & trainings. I took a TON of notes which I’m totally geeked to share with my business partner, create a plan to move forward and start talking to clients with a renewed sense of purpose and clarity.

If the only thing I got was more work from "grunt testing" my website, it would be worth it. If the only thing I got was more interaction from my clients, meaning more money, it would be worth it. Imagine the frustrations of not enough work, not enough money being replaced with the ability to make your client feel good about giving you their money! What happens if you miss this opportunity. I am so glad I paid so little and got so much. Now it is your turn to decide, are you going to spend a couple of bucks that could multiply your money?

You have a product or service to offer, but you are not sure how to get it into the hands of people who need it. Or, you want to see more people benefit from what you do. If that is the case, I encourage you to get a copy of this book, Building a StoryBrand, by Donald Miller. Miller coaches the reader in using a seven-point framework for telling your story, provides five essential steps to take first, and offers a roadmap to success. For me, the most illuminating concept in the book is Make the Customer/Client the Hero of Your Story. What most of us do is make our company the hero, but we will see more and better results if we show how we can help our customers/clients win in their own unfolding story. Another concept that captured my attention was Show Them How Their Lives Will Be Better after Using Your Product or Service. According to Miller, people have three levels of need: external, internal, and philosophical. We will want to demonstrate how our product meets all three kinds of need: a better mousetrap (external), a sense of security (internal), and a safer environment (philosophical). To sum up, Miller’s Building a StoryBrand will guide you along the way toward success whether you are marketing on a global scale or simply preparing a speech. If you need to communicate with others, no matter how large or small your audience, you will want to read this book next.

Marketing is not difficult, yet it triggers a negative “I can’t do it” or “I don’t know how” response from many people.

Know what your potential clients are asking for, fill their ask with your product or service and tell your clients in their words how you listened to them and created the solutions. Be proud and become your own cheerleader- you listened and you delivered, stop letting clients slip through your fingers.

Read the book to ease your anxiety around marketing so you can explain and sell your story in a way that clients will understand and resonate with.

Building a StoryBrand Rocks. It Truly Rocks.

I first heard Donald Miller speak on a podcast about marketing businesses online and what he said struck a chord immediately. You must position yourself (or your brand) as the guide - the customer is the hero - not you. His premise that we all respond innately to the beats of stories, and how the best marketing plans are built around specific points within that story blew me away. Making the customer the hero and positioning yourself or your business as the guide is what most successful brands already do - and knowing that has really opened my eyes.

I pre-ordered this book and finished it within only a few days. I have also had all of our employees read it - it has helped us change our business focus, our website, our automated email funnel sequences - pretty much everything. If you buy one book on marketing this year, make it this one. If you listen to one podcast today - make it Building a StoryBrand. It will change your business, and your life.

My mind is blown and I'm not even on page 100!

This book, “Building a Brand Story: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen,” by Donald Miller, is a gem summing up college semesters worth of information on story-telling and construction into actionable steps for the reader and business owner to apply in a fundamental way that is easy to digest. This alone proves the book to be invaluable, yet additionally it provides peace of mind that eliminates doubt and instills a sense of confidence in sharing the story behind the brand or business that leads to more satisfied customers and more business.

I’ve only begun the book the day before yesterday, and today I found myself on pgs 75-77 with an example that made me put down the book and log into my Amazon account just so that I could leave a ‘review’ as there is an interesting dynamic at play here! Perhaps with my reading a little late, the Copyright 2017 (by Donald Miller), and as of today it is July of 2021 I have the gift of hindsight in being able to share my perspective on this particular example and perhaps pose an interesting point.

Under the heading ‘The Fatal Mistake’, which maybe ironic (again, I haven't finished the book yet!). In reference to the brand ‘Tidal’ the author states “Rapper Jay Z founded the company with a personal investment of a whopping $56 million [...],” and goes on to conclude that “Tidal existed to help the artist win the day, not customers [...].”

In spring of this year (2021) Jay-Z reportedly sold Tidal for $302 million which reportedly increased his net worth by 40%. This may or may not be true however it is worth noting in taking a look further at the example in the book!

Maybe The Artist is ‘The Customer’, The Industry is ‘The Villain’, Those Who Pay are ‘The Hero(es)’, and the brand (‘Tidal’) is ‘The Guide’. This would make sense as Jay-Z gave us ‘the blueprint’ and seems to me liberating, not fatal. It’s a win-win for the artist (who gets paid more their worth) and the customer (who would pay for any other streaming service, gets to be ‘The Hero’ who uses their coin to set the artist free from ‘The Villain’).

I’ve always respected Jay-Z as an artist and lyricist (he is not in my Top 3 Favorite Rappers Dead or Alive, but in my Top 5 depending on the day), however this example highlighted for me his magnificence as a storyteller and brilliance as a businessman. I just had somewhat of an ‘aha’ moment which truly opened my eyes as I’ve heard talk of this about him before and didn’t fully comprehend the skill involved (which this book has helped me be able to do).

Again, great book! Worth every penny. My mind is blown and I'm not even on page 100! I’m getting back to it now, just wanted to make that point. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their storytelling abilities, as it is an important, if not vital life skill for everyone, including those who are building a brand.
